Beware of Different "Autumn Tigers" in the Northwest Journey Before and After the Last Fall

2023-08-22

Xinhua News Agency, Lanzhou, August 16th (Reporter Wang Zixuan, Wang Peng) According to the Gansu Provincial Meteorological Bureau, since August, areas such as Hexi and southeastern Gansu have continued to experience "high fever", accompanied by extreme weather such as strong winds, sandstorms, thunderstorms, and short-term heavy rainfall. Experts suggest that the "Autumn Tiger" in the northwest has a strong momentum and a fast changing face. Tourists should make sufficient preparations and travel scientifically. Since the beginning of autumn, regions such as Jiuquan, Wuwei, Longnan, and Baiyin in Gansu have successively issued high-temperature orange warning signals. The highest temperature in some areas can reach over 37 degrees Celsius, and some areas of Dunhuang City once exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. At the same time, Baiyin, Longnan, Zhangye, Jinchang and other places successively issued rainstorm warnings of different levels, and the maximum hourly rainfall intensity in some areas was more than 50 mm. In the past two days, the Hexi region has encountered strong wind and dust weather, with northwest winds ranging from 5 to 7 degrees, and some areas have experienced maximum winds exceeding 10 degrees. The strongest sandstorm in August of this year occurred in the central and northern parts of Wuwei, and the minimum visibility in Liangzhou District dropped below 400 meters. Some tourists have released videos while driving through the Hexi region, showing sand surging outside the car and yellow sand flooding the sky, posing a high risk of travel. The meteorological department pointed out that the scenic spots in Hexi and southeastern Gansu are densely distributed, making them the first choice for people to travel to Gansu. Since the beginning of this year, famous "check-in areas" such as Mogao Grottoes and Jiayuguan have been overcrowded with tourists, making it difficult to obtain a single ticket. But these areas have a dry climate and are often prone to high temperatures. At the same time, there is a large temperature difference between day and night, especially in the desert and Gobi areas in the west of the river. The vegetation is relatively scarce and there is a lack of shelter. Unscientific travel methods can easily affect the tourism experience. Experts suggest that the final season of this year will end on August 19th. Although the weather has turned cooler, there is a clear alternation of hot and cold, dry and wet in the northwest region, and the climate is more variable. It is recommended to take a good strategy during the tour, pay attention to meteorological warnings in a timely manner, and adjust the plan according to the weather conditions. When traveling in the Hexi region, it is necessary to prepare masks, hats, headscarves, rain gear, and various types of clothing to avoid sunburn, inhalation of dust, or catching a cold. On sunny days, one should avoid the hottest period of direct sunlight at noon, avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or vigorous exercise, rest and replenish water in a timely manner, and seek medical attention in case of discomfort. Be in awe of undeveloped deserts and Gobi, and do not drive or hike recklessly.
