In recent years, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council have issued a series of policies to promote the inheritance, innovation, and development of traditional Chinese medicine, leading to historic achievements and global changes in the field of traditional Chinese medicine. As a major province of traditional Chinese medicine in the western region, Gansu has seized opportunities for the development of traditional Chinese medicine, accelerated the development of its traditional Chinese medicine industry cluster, established an industrial chain development system covering the entire process of planting, warehousing, circulation, processing, scientific innovation, and use of traditional Chinese medicine, and promoted the high-quality development of the traditional Chinese medicine industry and services in Gansu Province. It is understood that Gansu is an important drug source base and a guarantee base for the production and supply of traditional Chinese medicine raw materials in China. According to Liu Borong, there are 3626 types of traditional Chinese medicine resources in the province, including over 220 artificially planted varieties, over 110 large-scale cultivation (aquaculture), and over 30 authentic medicinal herbs; Among the 363 key varieties in China, Gansu has 276. In 2022, the planting area of traditional Chinese medicine in Gansu Province was 4.91 million acres, with a standardized planting rate of 55% and a production capacity of 1.47 million tons. The static storage capacity of traditional Chinese medicine reached 1.3 million tons, and the annual trading volume of traditional Chinese medicine materials exceeded 1.5 million tons, both ranking among the top in the country. In 2023, the planting area will be around 5 million acres, and the yield is expected to reach 1.55 million tons. According to Wen Weidong, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee of Dingxi City, Gansu Province, during the first three sessions of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Industry Expo, Dingxi City signed a total of 106 projects with a signed amount of 14.39 billion yuan, and introduced 11 leading pharmaceutical enterprises. The proportion of the added value of the traditional Chinese medicine industry in the regional GDP increased from 5.9% in 2018 to 8.1% in 2022, and the output value of traditional Chinese medicine processing enterprises increased from 3.5 billion yuan in 2018 to 7 billion yuan in 2022.
