Unpacking expired drugs at home before discarding them

2023-08-18

Recently, many cities in China are carrying out household expired drug recycling activities. According to relevant statistical data, 78.6% of households in China have household small medicine boxes, but over 80% of households do not have the habit of regularly cleaning medicine boxes. In this regard, experts suggest that citizens should promptly clean up expired drugs in their family medicine boxes. Individuals should remove the packaging of expired drugs before discarding them to prevent reuse. The reporter consulted six chain pharmacies in the city, including JD.com Pharmacy, Neptune Star, and 111 Pharmacy, all of which stated that they will not recycle expired drugs. A few communities, such as Haidian District and Xicheng District, have carried out special activities for "waste drug recycling" and placed drug recycling boxes. I don't know how to classify expired drugs at home. They are all directly thrown into the trash can, "said Mr. Zhang, a resident of Chaoyang. He has also considered sending expired drugs to formal recycling points for unified treatment, but there is no dedicated place near the community to recycle expired drugs. Tang Kun, the pharmacist in charge of the pharmacy department of the Sino Japanese Friendship Hospital, introduced that the pharmacy departments of medical institutions such as hospitals will promptly handle drugs approaching their expiration date, and there will be no expired drugs. For the public, expired drugs can be directly disposed of as hazardous waste and placed in red trash cans. At present, there are very few institutions or units that recycle expired drugs. It is recommended that relevant departments make long-term plans for the recycling of expired drugs. When cleaning up expired drugs, the packaging can be removed first and then discarded. Tang Kun said that when cleaning up oral tablets, capsules, granules, and pills, the packaging box can be torn first, and then the drugs can be removed and crushed from the inner packaging; Liquid medications such as eye drops and oral liquid should be poured out before being discarded; Semi solid topical formulations such as ointments and creams are first extruded from the internal ointment and then discarded. Tang Kun reminds that there is no need to stock up on medication in a small family medicine box. Generally, two to three courses of medication can be prepared to treat common diseases such as colds; Emergency medications such as hypertension can be prepared for one month's use.
