Why do the drums of a thousand years echo endlessly?

2023-08-08

The bronze drum was a commonly used bronze artifact among the ancient southern ethnic groups. The earliest discovered copper drum is the Wanjiaba copper drum in Yunnan, dating back over 2600 years. At that time, the bronze drum symbolized power and wealth, and was commonly used for sacrifices, wars, entertainment, etc. It is known as the "Northern Ding and Southern Drum" in the academic community, indicating its important historical position. The bronze drum represents the advanced level of metallurgical and casting technology at that time, containing rich historical and cultural connotations. From the numerous historical bronze drums preserved to this day, it can be seen that Central Plains culture and technology have had a significant impact on the development and evolution of bronze drums. Until today, bronze drums are still used in many ethnic groups in the south, and the sound of drums that have been around for thousands of years is still echoing. The "Great Integration" unit of the cultural relics and ancient books exhibition on forging a strong sense of Chinese national community, which is currently being exhibited at the Beijing Ethnic Culture Palace, and the multiple bronze drums exhibited in the "Sound of Copper Drums" exhibition area are important witnesses of the exchange and integration of various ethnic groups in the Central Plains and Southwest China. ▲ The Bronze Drum Exhibition of the "Great Integration" Unit of the Exhibition of Cultural Relics and Ancient Books to Solidify the Consciousness of the Chinese National Community. Historical evolution: Various ethnic groups jointly create and inherit the bronze drum culture, which has a long history and carries rich historical connotations and cultural information. The dissemination of bronze smelting technology provides a technological foundation for the casting of copper drums, enabling them to be presented in beautiful forms. The prosperity of bronze drum culture cannot be separated from the exchange and integration of various ethnic groups. In the interaction between various ethnic groups, the bronze drum culture has absorbed cultural elements from various regions and ethnic groups, gradually forming a diverse style and unique charm. On the one hand, the exchange of smelting technology among various ethnic groups is an important foundation for the dissemination of bronze drum culture. Over time, ethnic groups in different regions gradually mastered the technology of smelting bronze. During the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the Baiyue ethnic group transported a large amount of copper resources to the Central Plains region, and the developed smelting and casting technology in the Central Plains region gradually spread to the southern region, greatly shortening the process of Lingnan ancestors mastering bronze smelting and casting technology. Archaeological data shows that a large number of bronze vessels with animal like patterns, such as bronze vessels, were unearthed in Guangxi. The overall characteristics of their decoration are typical of the Central Plains cultural style, which is a witness to the exchange between the Central Plains and Lingnan regions. During the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, Yu Yue absorbed the advanced smelting and casting techniques of Wu Yue, hired famous craftsmen, and achieved a leap in metal smelting and casting technology, promoting the diversification and exquisite development of copper drum culture. After the Qin Dynasty unified Lingnan, advanced smelting and casting techniques were brought to the Lingnan region, promoting the Lingnan copper drum casting process to a new peak. For example, the local casting process adopts casting methods similar to full paradigm and internal mold external paradigm. On the other hand, the inheritance of bronze drum culture by the State of Chu is also of great significance. The state of Chu was one of the regions in ancient China where the bronze smelting and casting industry was relatively developed. The introduction of Chu's bronze ware to the Lingnan region catalyzed the germination and emergence of bronze culture in the Lingnan region. Later, the Luo Yue people gradually mastered the bronze casting technology and formed a unique bronze drum culture. The Liangmian Wanjiaba type copper drum unearthed in Xiangzhou Township, Tiandong County, Guangxi belongs to the period when the Luo Yue people lived in the Youjiang River Basin. Before the Qin Dynasty, Tiandong belonged to Baiyue Land, during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, it belonged to Luoyue, and after the destruction of Yue, it belonged to Chu. The "Records of the Grand Historian" contains records of King Mou of Chu sending troops to Nanping Baiyue Land, as well as the influence of Chu culture on the area. It is precisely due to the exchange and integration between various ethnic groups that,
