China Consumers Association: Pay attention to these four points when purchasing "leftover blind boxes" or hidden dangers

2023-08-08

Beijing, August 1st (Reporter Sun Hongli) On the 1st, the China Consumer Association released a consumption reminder for the "leftover blind box", stating that the uncertainty inherent in the "blind box" and the safety issues of the "leftover" itself may pose hidden dangers behind the "leftover blind box". The China Consumers Association stated that with the rise of the blind box economy, a food sales method called "leftover blind box" has recently emerged. It refers to operators using blind box sales to package food that is close to expiration or unsold on the same day and sell it at a discount. The "leftover blind box" to some extent reduces food waste, has creativity and mutual assistance, satisfies consumers' curiosity and freshness, and is affordable, which has quickly gained a lot of favor. As an emerging business method, 'leftover blind boxes' are not prohibited by law, but they must be operated in a standardized manner to effectively protect consumer rights and interests. "The China Consumers Association pointed out that on June 8, 2023, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued the' Guidelines for Blind Box Business Conduct (Trial) ', which comprehensively regulates blind box business behavior, with Article 5 clearly stating that, Food and cosmetics that do not meet the conditions for ensuring quality, safety, and consumer rights should not be sold in blind boxes. The China Consumer Association reminds consumers to pay attention to the types of food when purchasing "leftover blind boxes". The attributes of blind boxes determine their fixed prices, non observable products, and non selectable features. Compared with normal food purchases, consumers cannot directly observe the products before purchasing the "leftover blind box", nor can they choose food solely based on their preferences and quantity. If they buy food that does not meet their own taste, it may actually cause food waste. For consumers with dietary restrictions, it is important to be cautious when choosing the "leftover blind box". Pay attention to the storage environment. It is currently scorching heat, and the storage conditions for food are stricter. Not all "leftovers" can be sold as blind boxes. Perishable foods such as dairy and meat products have a short shelf life and are prone to rapid deterioration at high temperatures. Due to the packaging of "leftover food" by merchants before being picked up by consumers, there will still be a period of time, which adds safety hazards to food that is already "leftover". Pay attention to the shelf life date. For non catering service foods such as bread and cake, the shelf life of the food is the period during which the quality of the food is maintained under the indicated storage conditions. Once this period is exceeded, the food may deteriorate and the safety of the food cannot be guaranteed. Some businesses, in order to achieve better warehouse clearance results, play a "edge ball" in production time or blur the shelf life date. Consumers are in a relatively passive situation when they cannot directly choose food, which increases the risk of equity damage. Consumers must pay attention to the shelf life date, packaging date, and storage conditions of the "leftover blind box" food, or verify relevant information with sales personnel. Pay attention to the reputation of the merchant. The core of "leftover blind boxes" as food is still how to "eat well" and "eat safely". Consumers should start from their actual needs, treat "blind box" sales rationally, choose reputable and reputable merchants to purchase "leftover blind boxes", and avoid purchasing from unknown or inconsistent sources
