Why did Typhoon "Kanu" turn? What are the impacts on our country? Expert interpretation has arrived

2023-08-04

According to the Zhejiang Provincial Meteorological Observatory, this year's No. 6 typhoon, "Kanu", was located at 5:00 on the 4th, about 330 kilometers east by south from Yuhuan, Zhejiang Province. It is expected that after three days of maneuver, "Kanu" will move northeast and away from China. Since the formation of typhoon "Kanu", because the Horse latitudes on its north side is relatively stable, it is guided by the subtropical high to move all the way west by north, and the target is directed to the coastal land of Zhejiang and Fujian. However, after entering the East China Sea, "Kanu" is mostly in the state of staying in place on the ocean. On August 1, more than 1000 fishing boats delayed to open fishing docked at Shenjiamen Fishing Port in Zhoushan City to defend against typhoon (UAV photo). Affected by Typhoon "Kanu", the Zhejiang Provincial Fisheries and Typhoon Prevention Command has decided to postpone the scheduled fishing time at 12:00 noon on August 1st. All fishing boats will take shelter in the port, all recreational fishing boats will stop operating, and all marine aquaculture personnel will be evacuated and disembarked. Xinhua News Agency (photographed by Chen Yongjian) As the main guiding factor of typhoon movement, the location and shape of the Horse latitudes largely dominate the direction of the typhoon. Mao Yanjun, senior engineer of the Climate Center of Zhejiang Province, said that in the past week, the Horse latitudes over the northwest Pacific Ocean was an intensification cycle, and the Sphere of influence expanded westward and northward. "Kanu" was always on the south side of the strong subtropical high, and was guided by the easterly flow at the edge of the subtropical high, and kept moving westward. However, the relationship between the Horse latitudes and the typhoon is not static. When the subtropical high is affected by other weather systems and changes, or when the typhoon reaches its peak, the relationship between them may change. "The Horse latitudes dam is like an ambush on all sides, blocking the roads northward and northwest of Kanu. In meteorological terms, it is called 'trapped in the saddle field'." Mao Yanjun said, adding that the surrounding weather systems are evenly matched, no leading system can lead Kanu to continue, so it is stuck. "The main reason for the turning point is the rupture of the Horse latitudes on the north side of the 'Kanu'. After the opening of a new channel, the Horse latitudes on the south side of the 'Kanu' will fall to the south, and the guiding airflow will become the southwest wind on the north edge of the southern subtropical high, leading the 'Kanu' to move to the northeast like a guide." Mao Yanjun said that the rupture of the subtropical high is very sudden, so the turning angle of the 'Kanu' will be relatively sharp. Although the possibility of landing in China has decreased, due to the prolonged stay of "Kanu" in the East China Sea, it is still necessary to be vigilant against the impact of wind and rain. Xu Yi, the chief forecast expert of the Zhejiang Meteorological Observatory, said that the situation of Atmospheric circulation has just begun to adjust, and there is still great uncertainty about the movement path of the typhoon in the later period. The only thing that can be determined is that "Kanu" has strong strength and huge size, and whether it lands in China or not will bring us some wind and rain effects. The Zhejiang Meteorological Observatory predicts that today, affected by the "Kanu" peripheral circulation, there will be showers or thunderstorms in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province, and the local area will be heavy to rainstorm; Gusts of 12 to 14 in the central and southern waters of the East China Sea; The gusts in the nearby sea area passing through the center of the typhoon can reach levels 14 to 15. Mao Yanjun reminded that due to the high position of "Kanu", coastal areas such as Zhejiang need to be particularly vigilant against geological disasters such as landslides and mudslides that may be caused by short-term heavy rainfall.
