Guangzhou: Embracing the coolness of summer, there are "cool" ways for animals to relieve heat

2023-07-26

In the scorching summer, heatwaves continue to hit, and the continuous high temperature weather is a severe test for both humans and animals. Recently, Guangzhou Chimelong Wildlife World has launched a combination of heatstroke prevention and cooling exercises, with various summer prevention strategies, including fruits, air-conditioned rooms, and pool baths, to help animals cool down and embrace coolness. The reporter learned from Chimelong Wildlife World that in the scorching heat, conservationists prepare fruits for animals to learn about. In the park, you can see hippopotamuses happily soaking in the water, munching on watermelons with their mouths wide open, with a charmingly naive demeanor. In addition to having a fruit feast, ice cubes are also a favorite among animals. We regularly add ice cubes, and many animals like to play around them, "said Chimelong conservationists. It is understood that during the scorching heat, the caregivers will also raise the water level of the pool in the park, providing animals with sufficient bathing and water playing space, allowing them to enjoy the coolness to the fullest. With the arrival of scorching heat, the national treasure pandas have also started the "lying flat" mode of eating, sleeping, and avoiding heat. At the Panda Park, Shuai Shuai, one of the panda triplets, is leisurely holding the ice bed, enjoying the coolness of the ice bed and drinking the carefully prepared Cantonese herbal tea by the caregiver. Not far away, there are also various summer foods such as fresh bamboo leaves, bamboo shoots, and fruits. According to Chimelong conservationists, they will keep monitoring and patrolling animals, and take corresponding summer measures according to different living habits of animals. For example, for larger animals such as Asian elephant, there is a large pool in the exhibition area to facilitate Asian elephant to take a bath to cool down. At the same time, mud baths and sand baths are provided for them to play and also to prevent heatstroke. For animals with exuberant fur and activity, such as black bears and Sun bear, ice cubes will be prepared to cool down. To ensure that animals can spend a cool summer, the park has added air conditioning and fans to multiple facilities, and has carried out unified maintenance of old equipment. The park staff stated that various methods of heat dissipation, such as physical cooling and dietary therapy, are currently used. Water pools and fans are built outdoors, and air conditioning is installed indoors, running continuously for 24 hours to continuously provide cooling for the animals. In the Kaola venue, air conditioning is installed in each room and multiple fans are installed outdoors, allowing the Kaola to feel cool anytime and anywhere. In order to prevent heatstroke in animals, staff will also monitor their body temperature and condition at all times. "Animals are prone to heatstroke in hot weather. We have arranged a professional animal expert and veterinary team to conduct regular physical examination of animals, and take preventive measures against heatstroke to ensure that animals can safely spend the summer," said the person in charge of Chimelong Animal World.
