Hong Kong Story | An Octopus card Card Helps Find the Aged with Dementia

2023-07-18

On a 277 X-ray bus from Lantian, Kowloon, Hong Kong to Fanling, New Territories, an old man photographed Octopus card, the card reader did not sound the "beep" prompt sound as usual, but issued a rapid warning sound, and the four red lights on the driver's left front console also lit up at the same time. The bus driver immediately reported the situation to the headquarters of Kowloon Motor Bus Corporation (hereinafter referred to as "Kowloon Bus") after seeing the abnormal prompt of card taking, and the Hong Kong police also received the notice at the same time. After the police informed her husband of the news of finding the owner of Octopus card, the family's heart was finally put down. ▲ Jiuba staff demonstrated the use of the elderly Octopus card (photographed on May 12). Long Jingyi, a reporter from the Xinhua News Agency, took a picture and stuck it in her hand to help track the Octopus card that was prompted to be abnormal. The owner is Grandma Chen, 81 years old. She has flexible legs and feet, and can move freely. From the appearance, she is no different from ordinary old people, but she is a patient with cognitive impairment. At around 7:00 on February 14 this year, Grandma Chen, who lives in Choi Hung Estate, Kowloon Bay, went out for a walk nearby as usual. She, who usually returns home within half an hour, has yet to show up towards noon. The husband who was waiting at home, considering her physical condition and recalling that she had been constantly saying 'I want to go to Fanling and the old neighborhood to reminisce about the past', couldn't help but worry and immediately called the police for help. After receiving the report, the police asked Grandma Chen and her husband about her Octopus card number, and then immediately notified the Jiuba and MTR bus companies to enter the card number information into the vehicle management system. "Once Grandma Chen gets on the bus or subway, we can get her position at the first time," said You Kaiyin, senior inspector of the Hong Kong Police Force Support Section. At 3:45 p.m., the KMB system detected that the lost Grandma Chan boarded the 277 X-ray bus bound for Fanling at Choi Hung Estate. The driver immediately sent the information to the KMB headquarters and the police. Hong Kong KMB Chief Inspector Xie Weibin is at work (photographed on May 12th). At this moment, Xinhua News Agency reporter Long Jingyi took a photo. After receiving a notice from the headquarters, KMB Chief Inspector Xie Weibin, who was patrolling near Fanling, immediately stopped the 277 X-ray bus at a nearby bus stop, comforting the elderly while guiding her to get off the bus. Many elderly people like to take buses because they can sightseeing along the way. So starting from our section can increase the chances of finding lost elderly people, "Xie Weibin said. According to Hong Kong police statistics, out of the 2054 cases of missing persons in 2022, there were 557 cases involving elderly people over 65 years old and 358 cases involving patients with cognitive impairment. This means that out of every 10 cases of disappearance in Hong Kong, about 3 involve elderly people. Since the beginning of 2023, the Hong Kong police have established a cooperation plan with KMB and MTR to enhance the automatic toll collection system to search for missing persons. Currently, they have successfully assisted 9 missing elderly people in returning home safely. At present, the population of Hong Kong aged 65 and above has reached 1.56 million, accounting for 21.3% of the total population. The police predict that with the intensification of population aging, the number of lost elderly cases may further increase in the future. Therefore, the joint operation between the police, KMB and MTR has become particularly important
