Be careful! Hand, foot, and mouth disease is not a child's "patent"

Recently, a couple limped to the dermatology clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University to help each other. Huang Weining, the Chief physician of dermatology who received them, carefully examined them and found blisters on their hands and feet. After detailed consultation, Huang Weining learned that not only were their hands and feet covered with blisters, itching, and pain, but they also had a low fever. Based on a comprehensive examination and symptoms, they were diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease. Upon hearing this news, they were puzzled: Isn't it eczema? Isn't hand, foot, and mouth disease just for children? How can adults in their early thirties also suffer from this disease? After further understanding, dermatologists from Guangzhou Medical First Hospital learned that the female patient in this couple was a teacher who had been staying with the children for a long time. According to her recollection, a while ago, there were many children in her class who were on leave due to fever or diagnosed with hand, foot, and mouth disease. The doctor determined that this may be the reason for her infection with the virus, while her boyfriend is likely to have been infected by her. "Hand, foot and mouth disease is mainly transmitted through close contact and respiratory droplets. Drinking or eating water and food contaminated by the virus may be infected." Huang Weining said that Coxsackie virus CV-A16 and Enterovirus EV-A71, the most common causes of hand, foot and mouth disease, can also infect adults and cause transmission. She reminds that during the peak period of hand, foot, and mouth disease every year, although children are the main victims, adults who take care of children may also be caught if they do not pay attention to prevention. "Therefore, while caring for small children, adults should also be vigilant and take good precautions to avoid infection." According to Huang Weining's observation, among the hand foot mouth disease patients who recently came to the dermatology clinic of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, there were several young parents or staff of educational institutions. It is reported that the symptoms of hand, foot, and mouth disease are generally mild, and most people often experience fever symptoms first when they come on. At the same time, or 1-2 days later, there may be maculopapules and herpes (redness can be seen around the rash) in the palm and foot, as well as herpes and ulcers in the oral mucosa, with obvious pain. Some patients may have symptoms such as cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and headache. A few patients with serious illness can be complicated with encephalitis, meningitis, Myocarditis, pneumonia, etc. If not treated in time, life may be endangered. Therefore, Huang Weining reminded that adults should not neglect personal hygiene and protection when caring for children with hand foot mouth disease. They should wash their hands frequently, pay attention to cleaning and disinfection, do not share towels, bedding and other Household goods with children, and pay attention to ventilation indoors. When symptoms such as fever and rash occur, they should seek medical advice in a timely manner. After diagnosis, they should care and treat at home to avoid infection to others.
