WHO: Aspartame or carcinogen, with a maximum daily safe intake

2023-07-14

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives of the Food and Agriculture Organization (JECFA) today released the assessment results of Aspartame's impact on health. The International Agency for Research on Cancer cited "limited evidence" of carcinogenicity to human beings and classified Aspartame as a possible carcinogen to human beings (International Agency for Research on Cancer Group 2B). WHO: Aspartame is carcinogenic, with a maximum daily safe intake. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener, which has been widely used in various food and beverage products since the 1980s. The Department of Nutrition and Food Safety of WHO said that the assessment of Aspartame showed that safety was not the main problem in terms of daily dosage, but the report had described its potential impact and needed more and better research. It is reported that this evaluation is the first time that the International Agency for Research on Cancer has evaluated Aspartame, and also the third evaluation conducted by JECFA. JECFA concluded that the evaluation data showed that there was no sufficient reason to change the previously determined daily acceptable intake (ADI) of Aspartame from 0 to 40 mg/kg body weight. Therefore, the committee reiterates that a person's daily intake is safe within this limit. Assuming that there is no other food intake, a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg Aspartame will require an adult weighing 70 kg to drink more than 9-14 cans per day to exceed the daily allowable intake. Experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer said that the evidence on carcinogenicity of humans and animals is limited, and the evidence on how carcinogenicity occurs is also limited. More research is needed to improve the understanding of whether consumption of Aspartame constitutes a carcinogenic hazard. It is understood that WHO, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, will continue to monitor new evidence and encourage the independent research team to further study the potential link between consumption of Aspartame and consumer health.
