On July 3, the reporter learned from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "HKUST") that in order to further enhance Transdisciplinarity and teaching capabilities, the University's interdisciplinary curriculum affairs office was officially upgraded to an interdisciplinary college (hereinafter referred to as "the college"). The new college will meet the needs of the society, flexibly launch new teaching courses, and promote Transdisciplinarity in emerging fields, including art technology and biological design, so as to cultivate more interdisciplinary talents to deal with complex social issues and support Hong Kong to build an international innovation center. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology stated that the establishment of an interdisciplinary college will help attract, cultivate, and retain interdisciplinary talents, in order to strengthen the university's recruitment of interdisciplinary faculty in six research fields: biology and translational medicine, materials science and future energy, artificial intelligence and future computing and electronics, innovative business management and financial technology, environmental science sustainability and green technology, art technology, and humanities, And cultivate students who can cope with diverse and complex issues in current society. Faced with urgent issues such as global population aging and climate change, traditional single disciplines are no longer sufficient to address them. They need to be addressed by integrating different academic fields and learning from each other's strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, interdisciplinary approaches are becoming increasingly important in the fields of education and research, "said Ye Yuru, the principal of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. It is reported that the college will launch a new Master of Science and Technology Innovation program in addition to the current 11 undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary courses, and expand existing academic programs to further strengthen the integration and exchange between different colleges. Guo Yike, the chief vice president of HKUST, revealed that as an academic hub, HKUST will also use flexible policies to enhance the influence of Transdisciplinarity, hire talents in emerging fields, and support cross campus programs to enhance cooperation with HKUST (Guangzhou). At the same time, the school is preparing to launch a master's course in scientific and technological innovation, which will be taught by the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering of HKUST, and has cultivated five unicorns and Li Zexiang's design from many start-ups. The course aims to cultivate a group of professional talents who possess both engineering technology knowledge and marketing skills, in order to promote technology transfer and research achievements. The College will also enhance the influence of Transdisciplinarity achievements to support the development strategies of HKUST, including HKUST (Guangzhou). A series of measures include optimizing the core curriculum of universities and expanding the iconic Undergraduate Research Program (UROP) of HKUST into a new program called UxOP, allowing students to apply their knowledge and abilities through experiential research, teaching, internships, and research on global challenges and opportunities, and communicate with students from different disciplinary backgrounds. As for research, the college will promote breakthroughs in scientific research through interdisciplinary cooperation, especially in emerging fields such as developing interdisciplinary scientific computing that can be applied to advanced algorithms and software systems in physics, chemistry, and environmental sciences; Develop new medical equipment, treatment plans, and diagnostic tools for biological design by combining engineering and biology; And new forms of artistic expression created through the combination of art and technology, as well as art and technology that can be used to address social and cultural issues.
