Official unveiling of the National Museum of Nature

2023-06-06

On the 5th, the National Museum of Nature was officially unveiled in Beijing, marking a new chapter in the development process of China's natural museums. The National Museum of Nature is the only national and comprehensive natural museum in China, representing the protection, research, collection, interpretation, and display of natural objects and natural heritage with historical, scientific, and artistic value in the development of human society. The predecessor of the National Museum of Natural History can be traced back to the Preparatory Office of the Central Museum of Natural History established in April 1951. In 1959, it was relocated from the old site inside the Palace Museum to the new site of the Tianqiao Bridge, and was named the Beijing Museum of Natural History in 1962. It was the first large-scale natural history museum established by the People's Republic of China on its own, and was one of the first national first-class museums. It was opened to the public for free in 2008. In January 2023, with the approval of relevant departments, it was renamed as the "National Museum of Nature". After decades of construction and development, the National Museum of Nature has achieved fruitful results in specimen collection, scientific research, and scientific popularization in the fields of geosciences and life sciences such as paleontology, animals, plants, and anthropology. Currently, the museum has a collection of over 370000 items, with the number of rare specimens ranking first among domestic natural museums. Examples include the earliest placental mammal Chinese Jurassic fossil in the world, the restored full body feather color of the Hesperidosaurus fossil, the only well preserved "Yellow River Elephant" fossil, and many precious national ritual specimens. The museum's basic display focuses on biological evolution, with permanent exhibitions of ancient reptiles, ancient mammals, and other animals. Every year, it also launches temporary and itinerant exhibitions with different themes. It has visited more than 20 countries and regions on 6 continents to hold itinerant exhibitions, and collaborated with more than 50 well-known universities and museums from more than 30 countries and regions to carry out scientific research work and exchange innovative science popularization projects.
