22.95 million people use it and read 1.2 billion words every day. WeChat helps this group bridge the "digital divide"

This feature is very useful. I don't know much about literacy, and using it allows me to know what children are chatting about in groups, "said Aunt Zhu, 63, of WeChat's" listening to text messages. Although Aunt Zhu doesn't have much literacy, WeChat's "reading text messages" helps her enjoy the convenience of digital life just like everyone else. In April 2022, the WeChat "Care Mode" officially launched the "Read Text Message" function, helping illiterate/visually impaired users, especially elderly users, to have equal access to information. As of May 10, 2023, 46.15 million users have activated WeChat's "care mode", and 22.95 million people have activated "listening to text messages". "listening to text messages" reads 1.2 billion words per day, with a cumulative reading of about 253.1 billion words. People like Aunt Zhu are not a minority. According to the 51st Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet, as of December 2022, the number of netizens in China reached 1.067 billion, of which 14.3% were "60 years old and above" netizens. According to the seventh national population census, there are a total of 38 million illiterate adults nationwide, with women accounting for 75% of them. In 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology launched the "Internet Application Aging and Accessibility Improvement Special Action", focusing on solving the difficulties faced by special groups such as the elderly and disabled when using intelligent technologies such as the Internet. Under the guidance of the special action of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, WeChat actively carries out aging and barrier free transformation and upgrading, and helps the silver age group enjoy digital convenience through product capability optimization. In September 2021, WeChat launched the "Care Mode", in which the fonts and buttons in the WeChat app became larger, the colors became stronger, and the mobile interface was significantly simplified. But in the modern society where digital tools are booming, adapting to aging is far more than simply adjusting software interfaces. Many people have encountered the same problem as Aunt Zhu, where the literacy threshold and vision requirements required by digital tools have become a major obstacle for the less literate and visually impaired groups to enjoy the convenience of digital life. Developing a feature that allows people with limited literacy to "play" on WeChat, and those with visual impairments to connect happily with family and friends through WeChat, was the first reaction of the WeChat team after learning about the needs of millions of "Aunt Zhu". To this end, the WeChat team quickly invested manpower in the development of the "listening to text messages" function. After updating to the latest version of WeChat, users can activate the "Listen to Text Messages" function through "Settings>Care Mode>Listen to Text Messages". After opening, tap the text message in "Single Chat" and "Group Chat" to hear the reading aloud. After the function was launched, the WeChat team actively listened to user feedback and conducted continuous iterative upgrades for product capabilities. At first, the name of the feature launched was "Read Text Message", but the WeChat team found that "Read Text Message" can easily make users misunderstand, "thinking they should read it, feeling confused." Based on this, the WeChat team changed the feature name from "Read Text Message" to "Listen to Text Message". In addition, considering that the ability of elderly people to hear high notes decreases after hearing loss, the voice for "listening to text messages" has also been changed from a female voice with a higher Hertz to a male voice with a lower Hertz that is easier to hear
