Everest scientific expedition team successfully climbed to the top and conducted multiple scientific investigations

2023-05-24

At around 12:30 on the 23rd, 13 mountaineers from the 2023 Mount Everest scientific examination successfully climbed to the top of Mount Everest on Earth. Afterwards, they will complete important scientific research tasks such as collecting snow and ice samples from the peak. On May 23rd, members of the scientific expedition team upgraded their automatic weather station at an altitude of approximately 8830 meters above Mount Everest. This is the second time that China's Mount Everest scientific research has exceeded an altitude of over 8000 meters since 2022, as photographed by Xinhua News Agency's special correspondent Raba. On that day, the expedition team used scientific instruments to collect snow and ice samples from the summit of Mount Everest for analyzing climate and environmental indicators. Fixed steel wire ropes, replaced batteries, and installed wind speed and direction sensors... At 3am on the same day, the expedition team set off from the assault camp at an altitude of 8300 meters and climbed for 8 hours to reach the world's highest automatic meteorological observation station at an altitude of 8830 meters. After about an hour of intense work, the upgrade of the meteorological station components has been completed. For this reason, they have undergone over 10 repeated exercises in places such as the Kuo Qiong Gangri Glacier and the Everest Base Camp in Tibet, ensuring that everyone is familiar with the operating procedures. "The maintenance and upgrading of automatic weather observation stations have focused on the battery life in extreme environments. Precipitation observation has been added to the observation stations below 6500 meters above sea level to obtain more comprehensive meteorological observation data and provide basic data for researchers to study the change characteristics of meteorological elements at very high altitude, changes in glaciers and snow cover," said Zhao Huabiao, a researcher at the Qinghai Tibet Plateau Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. This year's scientific examination has a wider range of disciplines, with more representative members and more high-end instruments and equipment, especially the innovative new batteries that cooperate with the lunar exploration project, which will provide reliable energy supply for the operation of extreme environmental instruments and equipment at the peak, "said An Baosheng, the on-site commander of the 2023 Zhufeng scientific examination.
