Global scientists call for strengthened cooperation to address common challenges

The opening ceremony of the 2023 Greater Bay Area Science Forum was held in Guangzhou on the 21st. This forum has attracted nearly a hundred academicians and experts from various fields from around the world, who called for strengthening scientific and technological cooperation to address the common challenges facing humanity. Ding Zhaozhong, the 1976 Nobel Prize winner in physics and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that China has world-class experimental physicists. They have imagination, the ability and experience to develop new technologies and lead international cooperation, and can lead cutting-edge experimental physics, continuing to make important contributions to human knowledge. Professor Daniel Koeman from the University of California, Berkeley emphasized the importance of international cooperation in addressing the challenge of climate change in his speech. He stated that comprehensive solutions and social and cultural empowerment can significantly accelerate the process of deep decarbonization and community and ecosystem recovery. Ye Yuru, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and academician of the CAS Member, made a speech on the role that the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area can play in coping with population aging. She stated that the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area is an important engine for national technological innovation and economic development. We should fully leverage the advantages of the Greater Bay Area, strengthen cross domain, cross regional, and cross system cooperation, gather the three regions and international technological innovation forces, jointly promote the development of aging research and response measures, and contribute to the country's effective strategic demand for population aging. Teng Jinguang, President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and academician of the CAS Member, put forward suggestions on further improving the scientific and technological cooperation in the Greater Bay Area, including setting up the Greater Bay Area Research Funding Fund, setting up a number of laboratories in the Greater Bay Area, jointly building large-scale scientific devices, setting up a short-term teacher exchange mechanism, and increasing student exchange opportunities in various forms. The 2023 Great Bay Area Science Forum is sponsored by the "the Belt and Road" international scientific organization alliance, guided by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the China Association for Science and Technology, and hosted by the People's Government of Guangdong Province.
