Intelligent "gloves" can enhance virtual reality tactile sensation

2023-05-16

According to a report on the website of New Scientist magazine in the UK on the 14th, American scientists have invented an intelligent "glove" that can send electrical signals to the nerves in the wearer's palm, making the wearer feel like they are grasping objects in virtual reality (VR). To complement the visual experience of picking things up in VR, people often wear gloves that provide feedback to the palm, such as vibrations or electrical signals. However, gloves can also make the wearer's fingers dysesthesia, making it more difficult for users to perform smart tasks when wearing VR headphones. The University of Chicago team led by Takashi Tanaka has developed a device that uses an electrode mesh worn on the back of the hand and fingers to simulate or enhance tactile sensation, allowing the palm and fingers to move unobstructed. Neural stimulation can make a single finger feel as if it is touching something, because the human palm has more touch receptors than the back of the hand to receive electrical signals sent by electrodes. The research team tested the device in several VR experiences, such as in virtual climbing, which allows people to more keenly feel the ropes in their palms while climbing in VR. The team believes that these gloves are also very useful in real-life learning tasks. They are trying to use it for playing discs, and in this scenario, this smart 'glove' can provide feedback on when someone will fade in or out a specific music track. Researchers pointed out that because this glove does not cover the entire hand, it can be worn continuously and used inside and outside of VR. They presented this latest study at the 2023 Conference on Human Factors in Computer Systems. (New News Agency)
