Emphasizing that "on the new journey of building a strong country and national rejuvenation, we hope that Yunnan University will take the ideology of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era as the guide, fully implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the Party's educational policy, comprehensively improve the level of education, cultivate talents for the Party and the country, promote the strengthening of the consciousness of the Chinese national community, and make new and greater contributions to building an educational power. This is not only a requirement for Yunnan University, but also a fervent expectation placed on higher education in line with the needs of contemporary China. Undoubtedly, "comprehensively improving the level of education" is the common goal of all universities, while "cultivating talents for the Party and the country" is the duty and mission that higher education must undertake and adhere to. This call and expectation, based on the overall development of the Party and the country's cause in the new era and new journey, clearly reveals the basic principles and goals of "how to do and how to do" in universities of socialist China. The key to "how to do and how to do" in universities is to grasp the foundation of universities and practice the path of universities. 'Ben' is the fundamental and source of things. The Analects of Confucius states: "A gentleman's affairs are based on the foundation, and the foundation is established, and the way is born." Zhu Xi interpreted it as "everything is dedicated to the foundation, and if the foundation is established, the way is born on its own. Firstly, teaching and educating people is the original intention of universities. Teaching people to expand their cognition and enhance their mental growth through imparting knowledge and reasoning is the basic or even the only function of higher education in the early stages. At the beginning of the founding of New China, in April 1950, the first higher education conference in China proposed that colleges and universities should train high-level construction talents with cultural level, master modern science and technology, and serve the people wholeheartedly with the educational method consistent with theory and practice. In September 1961, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued the "Provisional Regulations on the Work of Higher Education Institutions Directly under the Ministry of Education (Draft)", emphasizing that higher education institutions must focus on teaching and pursue teaching quality. At the same time, production labor, scientific research, and social services should be reasonably arranged from the perspective of facilitating teaching. Taking teaching as the center and teaching as the main responsibility, cultivating the growth and success of the younger generation of college students in the process of imparting knowledge, methods, and principles is undoubtedly the original intention and true essence of a university. Universities must follow the order of conducting education well, focusing on teaching, and teaching wholeheartedly, guiding the power of imparting knowledge, cultivating, and shaping to the practical and profound, demonstrating the dominant position of teachers through teaching, highlighting the subject status of students through growth, and closely connecting teachers with students, teaching with learning, so that the original intention of university teaching and educating people will never change, and the true nature of university teaching and educating people will always be preserved. Secondly, teaching and educating people is the primary function of universities. With the development, evolution, and enhancement of higher education, the functions carried by universities are also constantly improving and enriching. From a global perspective, Newman University in the United States emphasizes a single teaching function, while Humboldt University in Germany strengthens its two major functions of teaching and research, and even Van Hayes proposed three university functions
