The domestic AI big model "Immortal Fight" is expected to lead industrial transformation

2023-04-27

In the past two months, the domestic AI big model field has pressed the "fast forward button". Since Baidu released ERNIE Bot and launched the "first shot" of the domestic AI model, Huawei, 360, Shangtang, Ali, Zhihu and other manufacturers have launched their own large models. The "100 model war" has suddenly started, and the intensity is comparable to the "immortal fight". However, while the popularity of large models remains high, the National Internet Information Office has also drafted the "Management Measures for Generative Artificial Intelligence Services (Draft for Soliciting Opinions)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Management Measures"), which has put the supervision of large models on the agenda. New technological breakthroughs and the arrival of regulation have emerged one after another, a situation that was unprecedented in the rise of technologies such as autonomous driving and blockchain in the past. How can the "Management Measures" achieve prudent and inclusive regulation, promote the healthy development and standardized application of generative AI in China? Phenomenon: After ChatGPT became popular across the entire network, Baidu was the first to provoke domestic wars in the competition for domestically produced large models. Afterwards, manufacturers with accumulated technology entered the market one after another, including Huawei's Pangu, 360's Smart Brain, Shangtang's Nissin, Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen, and Zhihu's Zhihaitu AI. Many manufacturers, such as JD and iFlytek, also "predicted" the arrival of the big model. If we include research institutes, according to statistics from Minsheng Securities, more than 30 large models have appeared in China, and the industry seems to have the intention of competing in large models. Not only that, the big model has also brought many well-known industry figures, even those who have been "retired for many years," such as Wang Huiwen, co-founder of Meituan, Wang Xiaochuan, founder of Sogou, and Li Kaifu, chairman and CEO of Innovation Works, back into the big model field. However, is it true that domestic companies are releasing AI big models in droves, or are some of them fishing in troubled waters? Industry insiders believe that among the leading players, Baidu's ERNIE Bot and Ali's Tongyi Qianwen have obvious advantages. Among other players, some manufacturers do have the long-term accumulation of AI technology and specific application scenarios, and the rest of the enterprises do have speculation. Controversy: Is the Hundred Model Battle a "repeated wheel building"? Some even believe that domestic manufacturers rushing to AI big models may have the suspicion of repeatedly "building wheels". Robin Lee, the founder, chairman and CEO of Baidu, said in an interview earlier that it is not meaningful for start-ups to make a new ChatGPT. "Many people are also asking me whether China will launch another OpenAI? Basically not. OpenAI was born because American big factories are not optimistic about this direction, but now Chinese big factories are optimistic about the AI big model, and are doing this direction." Robin Lee's suggestion to start-ups is to develop applications based on the big model, rather than reinventing the "wheel". Some analysts believe that every technology giant hopes to form a closed loop in their own ecosystem, partly because the entire domestic open source ecosystem is not strong enough. However, the fundamental reason why many AI giants and unicorns still insist on building their own large models is more likely because there are almost no high-performance ready-made products on the market
