Sun Dong: Life, health, artificial intelligence, etc. may become the "business card" of Hong Kong Innovation and Technology

2023-04-27

"The advantage of Hong Kong is to rely on the motherland and connect with the world." In order to practice this advantage, Sun Dong, Director of the Bureau of Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, was extremely busy. He followed Li Jiachao, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, to visit mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area and returned to Hong Kong. Later, he set out to lead the "peloton" of innovation to Switzerland to participate in the Geneva International Invention Exhibition. Amidst his busy schedule, Sun Dong gave an interview to a reporter from China News Agency, starting with a review of his trip to mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area. The visiting delegation was led by Chief Executive Li Jiachao, who led some officials of the SAR government and members of the Legislative Council to visit four cities: Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, and Guangzhou. These cities have developed very well in the past few years, especially with the rapid progress of the technology industry, each with their own 'business cards'. Sun Dong used this visit to reflect on how Hong Kong can develop in sync with mainland cities in the Greater Bay Area and help build an international innovation center through science and technology empowerment in promoting high-quality development. He visited BYD and Tencent in Shenzhen, Guangdong Bozhilin Robotics Co., Ltd. and "City Brain" in Foshan, which gave him inspiration that the development direction of innovation in these cities is very close to their urban development characteristics and also meets the development needs of the country. For example, the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and robots in Foshan is closely integrated with practical applications, focusing on construction robots, restaurant robots, etc., which coincides with the characteristics of Foshan's developed manufacturing industry. Sun Dong stated that the same logic should be applied to the development of Hong Kong's innovation and technology, focusing on industries such as life health technology, artificial intelligence, data science, advanced manufacturing, and new energy technology proposed in the "Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Development Blueprint". "These are all areas where we can create star enterprises in Hong Kong in the future." When ChatGPT developed by the American artificial intelligence research institution OpenAI swept the world, Sun Dong believes that Hong Kong can also move with the trend. "Many companies in mainland China are doing artificial intelligence, but there is still a way to go to achieve something like ChatGPT." He sees great potential for Hong Kong from this gap, We have a role to play in the construction of large models and technological development, as Hong Kong is preparing to establish its own supercomputing center. As an international data port, Hong Kong will have data and talent from both domestic and foreign sources in the future. Sun Dong is well aware that Hong Kong cannot create its own "business card" for innovation overnight. But the layout work has been fully carried out, and the center of all this work still needs to closely revolve around Hong Kong's own industrial characteristics and appropriate directions. In April of this year, the first International Innovation and Entrepreneurship Business Week, which gathered a series of exciting innovation activities, pushed the innovation atmosphere in Hong Kong to a new peak and also demonstrated the determination of the SAR government to make bold plans for the development of innovation. Sun Dong said, "We want to use this opportunity to show the world that Hong Kong has returned and tell the story of Hong Kong to both domestic and international audiences." The first stop to go out and tell the story of Hong Kong is Switzerland. Sun Dong led a Hong Kong delegation of about 500 people to Switzerland on the 25th with 293 projects to participate in the 2023 Geneva International Invention Exhibition. Sun Dong will also visit universities, research facilities, and pharmaceutical factories in Switzerland, hoping to present opportunities for Hong Kong's innovative development and attract more enterprises and
