The pressure on this generation of young people has changed from 'living a life' to 'having fun'

Teenagers are a barometer of the development of the times. Teenagers from different eras often face economic and life pressures, but they also exhibit certain differences with the development of the times. From February to April 2023, the research group of the "Current Situation and Improvement Path of Youth Spiritual Literacy Development" of the China Youth Research Center conducted a nationwide survey, collected 3811 questionnaires, conducted several interviews with teenagers and their parents, and compared contemporary teenagers with those of other eras, providing empirical support for grasping the differences in youth pressure in different times. Teenage stress spreads from a material level to a spiritual level. Research has found that the pressure faced by the father generation during adolescence is mainly economic pressure and life pressure. A 64 year old farmer recalled the past and said, "At that time, I only thought about how to plant this dish well and sell it at a good price. If I couldn't plant it well or sell it, the pressure was quite high, but I didn't think about anything else. Unlike it, the scope of contemporary adolescent stress has broken through the material level. Some interviewed young people said, "It's quite frustrating to think of their own limited psychological endurance, and I don't know what to do." Teenager stress has shifted from low intensity at low frequencies to high intensity at high frequencies, and even has universality. A 71-year-old retired female employee from a state-owned enterprise said, "There used to be pressure, but it was all temporary, immediate, and transactional things that quickly passed away, unlike the pressure faced by young people today." According to the "Jiangsu Youth Report 2021" data, 73.6% of young people currently have various problems. The 2021 survey data conducted by the China Youth Research Center on young migrant workers in cities also showed that 87.3% of young people reported experiencing difficulties such as high work pressure. Teenage stress has shifted from singularity in the past to superposition. A survey found that 71.45% of young people believe that the main reason for the phenomenon of "putting things down" is high life pressure. These pressures include academic/academic advancement, job search and employment, housing, children's education, physical health status, social and romantic relationships, development and improvement, parental care, leisure life needs, work family balance, etc., and highlight the synergistic effect, which can easily lead to a feeling of "being surrounded" among young people. There are differences in the sense of stress among adolescents in different eras, which is the result of the transformation of major social contradictions. In the past, teenagers faced the contradiction between the increasing material and cultural needs and backward social production, such as inadequate technological innovation, insufficient social supply, and inadequate computer and network facilities for teenagers; What we are facing now is the contradiction between the growing need for a better life and imbalanced and insufficient development, such as regional and urban-rural development imbalance, and differences in educational environment. The population structure of our country has changed, and teenagers are facing a real environment of "sandwich layer". The seventh national population census data shows that the population of young people aged 14-35 in China is about 400 million, accounting for 28.4% of the total population. According to the Statistical Yearbook of Youth Development 2021, combined with previous national censuses, the total number of young people has gradually decreased since 2000, with a decrease of 90 million compared to the peak of 490 million in 2000. The overall population structure of our country is showing an aging trend, with young people as the core labor force
