Insufficient sleep or weakened antibody response to vaccine

2023-03-15

The research team led by the University of Chicago and the National Institutes of Health and Medicine of France found that people who slept less than 6 hours a night in the days before and after vaccination were insensitive to antibodies. This shows that it is a simple way to promote healthy sleep time or improve the effectiveness of the vaccine before vaccination. The study was published in the journal Current Biology on the 13th. Researchers combed the literature, then combined and reanalyzed seven studies. They examined the effect of sleep duration on vaccination against viral diseases such as influenza and hepatitis. Research shows that self-reported sleep time is not a predictor of vaccine response. The researchers pointed out that although this association is strong for men, it is weak and not statistically significant for women. They believe that this may be because there is no research on women, such as considering the impact of menstrual cycle, contraceptive use and menopausal status on sex hormone levels. Using the results of the meta-analysis and comparing with the known vaccine antibody response data, the researchers estimated that the impact of insufficient sleep on the vaccine response was equivalent to the weakening of antibody two months after vaccination. Moreover, they have seen the same results in respiratory virus influenza and hepatitis affecting the liver, which indicates that this effect may extend to all types of viruses. The researchers hope that this study can stimulate more research on this phenomenon, clarify the impact on men and women, and better understand how sleep duration affects different vaccines, and how to optimize sleep to promote better vaccine response.
