3D imaging! The two-photon microscope of the Chinese space station has been tested successfully

2023-03-07

On November 12 last year, the two-photon microscope of the space station was successfully transported to the China Space Station by the Tianzhou-5 cargo spacecraft, becoming the first two-photon microscope in the world to enter space. Recently, the two-photon microscope of the China Space Station completed the in-orbit verification, and the Shenzhou 15 astronauts successfully obtained three-dimensional skin images through the microscope. The Shenzhou 15 astronauts completed the installation, commissioning and the first imaging test of the two-photon microscope, and successfully obtained the two-photon microscopic images of the astronauts' face and forearm skin in vivo. This is the scene of astronauts debugging the equipment. Zhang Lu is using the equipment to obtain the in vivo two-photon microscopic image of Fei Junlong's forearm skin in orbit. The two-photon microscope of the space station can clearly display the three-dimensional distribution of the astronaut's skin structure and cells with sub-micron resolution, and has the ability to conduct non-invasive microscopic imaging of the structure and composition of the skin surface. Astronauts can observe their skin cuticle, granular layer, spinous layer, basal cell layer, superficial dermis and other three-dimensional structures in real time on the screen. This on-orbit verification not only provides a new tool and method for astronauts' on-orbit health monitoring research, but also provides an important technical means for brain science research using the platform of the China Space Station in the future. As a national space laboratory, the China Space Station will continue to carry out more on-orbit scientific projects and obtain more good application benefits by carrying out science and technology test (practical) and application projects for the society.
