2023-03-03

The reporter learned from the Suzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism on the 2nd that archaeologists in the city found a large ancient kiln site group in the Southern Song Dynasty, and experts preliminarily judged that it was the "Pingjiang official kiln" contained in the "Zhongxing Book of Rites", a ritual document of the Southern Song Dynasty. The ancient kiln site group is located in Yuanhetang District, Xiangcheng District, Suzhou City, with an excavation area of 2918 square meters. 99 remains of kilns, drying areas, sedimentation tanks, wall sites, house sites, roads, wells, ash pits, kiln houses and other relics have been found, and 225 pieces of cultural relics such as gold bricks, pottery pots, pottery lamps and so on have been found. Liu Fangfang, a researcher of the Suzhou Archaeological Research Institute and the head of the archaeological excavation project of the ancient kiln site group in Yuanhetang, said that after archaeological research on the relics and cultural relics found in the ancient kiln site group, a pottery burning site from the Southern Song Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties was initially revealed. A batch of black pottery unearthed at the site, such as lamps, statues, pots, etc., are objects that have not been found in the past. Zheng Jiali, deputy director of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, believes that the pottery excavated in the ancient kiln site group in Suzhou is close to the artifacts unearthed in the former site of Lin'an, the capital of the Southern Song Dynasty, which can strongly prove that the ancient kiln site group is the "Pingjiang official kiln" contained in the "Zhongxing Book of Rites" of the Southern Song Dynasty. Wang Guangyao, the research librarian of the Palace Museum, said that this archaeological discovery has basically identified and found the clue of "Pingjiang Guan Kiln", which provides new materials and evidence for the source exploration project of Suzhou regional civilization, and has high archaeological and historical research value for studying the development and circulation history of the national kiln industry.
