Webb Telescope's First Data Reveals Mass Galaxies

2023-02-24

A paper published by the British journal Nature on the 22nd reported the candidate mass galaxy group formed about 500 million to 700 million years after the Big Bang. The mass of these galaxies has exceeded people's expectation for the mass of early galaxies. The observation results come from the first data released by the James Webb Space Telescope of NASA, which provides a new understanding for the formation of early galaxies. A massive galaxy with a star mass of 100 billion times that of the sun has been found in the range of the redshift z~6 before, and its formation time is about 1 billion years after the big bang, but the massive galaxy earlier than this has been difficult to find. Redshift is an indicator to measure the life of celestial bodies: due to the expansion of the universe, the wavelength of light emitted by distant celestial bodies will move towards the red end of the spectrum. The redder the image color is, the farther the distance of celestial bodies will be. Astronomers from the University of Science and Technology of Swinburn, Australia, screened candidates with high redshift (z=6.5 and z=9.1) from the observation results of the Webb Space Telescope to find massive galaxies in the first 750 million years of the history of the universe. This time, the research team found six candidate massive galaxies with a redshift between z=7.5 and z=9.1, all of which have a mass of 10 billion times higher than the sun, and one of them may have a star with a mass of 100 billion times that of the sun. The mass of the galaxy observed this time is far more than expected. If we can get the next step of spectroscopic verification, it will prove that in the early stage of the history of the universe, the mass of galaxies has increased much faster than expected.
