Strict sampling system of undergraduate thesis is worthy of affirmation

The undergraduate thesis needs to be squeezed dry. According to media reports, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education recently issued the Detailed Rules for the Implementation of the Sampling Inspection of Undergraduate Graduation Thesis (Design) in Zhejiang Province (for Trial Implementation), which specifies that the sampling inspection of undergraduate graduation theses should be carried out once a year, and the sampling object is the theses (design) awarded with bachelor's degrees in all undergraduate majors in the province in the previous academic year, and the proportion should not be less than 2% in principle. The regulation came into force in April this year. As for the results of the spot check, they will be used as an important reference basis for the classification evaluation of undergraduate colleges and universities, the qualification evaluation of undergraduate education, and even the distribution of enrollment plans, and the application of new majors. Specifically, the Provincial Department of Education will notify colleges and universities that have "graduation thesis (design) with problems" for two consecutive years and have a high proportion or a large number of papers to reduce their enrollment plans for relevant majors; For undergraduate majors with many problems in the spot check for three consecutive years, if they fail to meet the requirements after rectification, it will be deemed that the training quality cannot be guaranteed, and the Provincial Department of Education will order them to suspend enrollment, or recommend the Provincial Academic Degrees Committee to revoke their bachelor degree authorization points. There was a spot check of master's and doctoral theses before, and now the undergraduate theses are not "immune". In fact, as early as 2021, the Ministry of Education issued relevant documents to implement the undergraduate graduation thesis sampling system, and then the competent education departments in Shandong, Jiangsu and other places distributed and put on "tight bands" to universities within their jurisdiction. In the past, academic misconduct such as plagiarism, plagiarism and ghostwriting of undergraduate graduation papers were not likely to sink into the sea under the pressure of public opinion, but it was not difficult to find out after the inventory that the final result was mainly to revoke the degree obtained by the students involved and cancel the relevant qualifications of their supervisors. Students are the first responsible person for their own papers. If they touch the academic bottom line, they should bear the responsibility and pay the price. However, papers that obviously do not meet academic standards and are of poor quality can pass the defense and review, which cannot be achieved by students alone. This also reminds us that the ecology and soil that breeds chaos such as water flooding papers are more worthy of attention. Just as the random inspection system has not eliminated the phenomenon of ghosting and trading in master's and doctoral theses, the random inspection alone cannot completely solve the chaos in undergraduate graduation theses. It is pointed out that the current 2% of papers are set at a low sampling rate, which may reduce the probability of "accident" and allow more problematic papers to escape punishment. Binding the "problem paper" with the school's reputation and available educational resources to a certain extent may force the school to pay attention to improving the quality of education, strictly control the export of papers, deepen the reform of education evaluation, and innovate the teaching methods, including no longer "only paper". The practice of strict sampling system for undergraduate graduation thesis is certainly worthy of recognition, but to fundamentally eradicate the soil that breeds academic misconduct and purify the academic ecology of colleges and universities, we must play a combination of boxing. At present, there seems to be a considerable market for the view that the current employment pressure is still high, and students should be appropriately "released" on the paper issue, so that they can spare more energy to deal with job hunting or further study, so as to achieve a "win-win" between the school and students.
