International Children's Cancer Day: Early diagnosis and early treatment of children's tumors are the key

2023-02-15

February 15 is the International Children's Cancer Day. Children are the hope of every family. If a child suffers from malignant tumor, it will be a serious blow to the family. Children have abdominal pain, lumps and other abnormal symptoms. Few parents will think about malignant tumors, resulting in missed diagnosis and misdiagnosis of children's tumors. "At present, malignant tumors are an important cause of death for children under 14 years of age." Wang Shan, chief physician of oncology surgery in Children's Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing Medical University, introduced in an interview with the People's Daily Online reporter that among children's malignant tumors, leukemia, central nervous system tumors, lymphomas, neuroblastoma, and soft tissue sarcoma ranked among the top 5 in incidence rate. The incidence of tumor in children is also regular, and the infant period within 3 years of age is the peak period of incidence of various blastomas and malignant teratomas; Children are prone to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and soft tissue sarcoma; Adolescence is the peak period of osteosarcoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma and ovarian germinoma. Wang Shan reminded that children are too young to express their feelings effectively, which requires parents to pay more attention to the children's physical abnormalities. When the following symptoms occur, they should be highly vigilant and go to the hospital oncology department in time. 1. Keep low fever. If the fever of unknown cause continues for more than 1 week without remission, especially if it is ineffective after antiviral and antibiotic treatment, it should be treated as soon as possible. 2. Enlarged lymph nodes. The enlargement of lymph nodes does not disappear for a long time, and multiple lymph nodes in the neck tend to merge into a mass, or lymph nodes increase for a short time. 3. palpable mass. Once a lump is found in the child's neck, armpit, groin, abdomen, back waist, etc., the cause must be found out. 4. Pain. Long-term persistent or intermittent pain, such as headache, abdominal pain, bone and joint pain. 5. Abdominal pain and vomiting. Abdominal and intestinal tumors can cause intestinal obstruction due to mass compression, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty in urinating and urinating may occur. 6. Eyeball protrusion and eye pain. Some tumors in the eye may cause eye discomfort, abnormal appearance, such as "cat's eye", or visual impairment. 7. Anemia and bleeding. The child appears pale or bleeding for unknown reasons, such as ecchymosis of orbital skin, "panda eyes", etc. "But parents don't need to talk about cancer discoloration." Wang Shan said that unlike adult cancer, most solid malignant tumors in children are sensitive to chemotherapy and respond better to comprehensive treatment. The overall cure rate of children's tumors can exceed 70%. If early diagnosis and treatment are available, the cure rate will be higher. In terms of the overall treatment effect, the treatment effect of most children's cancer is much better than that of adult cancer. (Xinhua News Agency)
