China's smart phone market: folding screen grows against the trend in a downturn

2023-02-08

In the industry expectation that the market will continue to be saturated and the consumption will further decline, China's smartphone market will usher in a 10-year low in shipment and sales in 2022. The latest data from the Operation Monitoring and Coordination Bureau of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that in 2022, among the major products of China's electronic information manufacturing industry above designated size, the output of smart phones will reach 1.17 billion, down 8% year on year. According to the data released by the Internet Data Center (IDC) recently, China's smartphone shipments in 2022 fell 13.2% from 2021 to 286 million units, the first time in 10 years that they were less than 300 million units. At the peak of 2016, China's smartphone shipments reached 470 million units, a year-on-year contraction of about 40%. Production, shipment and sales all point to the decline of the smartphone market. Multiple factors led to the downturn of the smartphone industry. From the perspective of the global market, Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo collectively fell sharply, and the fourth quarter's performance was particularly bad. The shipment volume of smartphones dropped 18.3% year-on-year to 303 million units, the largest quarterly decline in history. Some industry analysts pointed out that at the end of 2022, the shipments of Samsung and Apple were severely damaged. Although there were some signs of stabilization in the third quarter, the market performance of the Asia-Pacific region and Europe in the fourth quarter of 2022 was the worst ever. "We have never seen such a low volume of shipments during the holiday season (smart phones)." IDC Research Director Popal said, "Although the large-scale promotional activities in the fourth quarter of last year helped to consume the existing inventory, they did not stimulate the growth of shipments." The lack of consumer exchange power has turned electronic fast consumer goods into durable goods for life, and smart phones have entered the bottleneck of development. "The impact of the epidemic on the mobile phone industry is only adding insult to injury." Speaking of the main reasons for the continuous decline of China's smartphone market, Guo Tianxiang, a senior analyst at IDC China, concluded that the market is saturated, the replacement cycle is longer, the technology development has encountered bottlenecks, the innovation of new products is insufficient, the promotion of 5G is lower than expected, the lack of new "killer" applications, the product quality is getting better, the performance is excessive and other factors are superimposed, This has led to the current situation. Folding screen mobile phones have a bright performance IDC data shows that in 2022, only Glory's shipment volume increased by 34.4% year on year. Canalys data also showed that Glory's shipment volume was 52.2 million units, an increase of 12 million units, and the gap between its market share and Vivo, the number one in the shipment volume, was narrowing. Unlike the dismal market situation of traditional straight-board smart phones, the growth of folding screen mobile phones in 2022 exceeded expectations. According to IDC data, in the fourth quarter of 2022, China's single-quarter shipments of folding screen products reached another record high, with more than 1.1 million units shipped. The annual shipment volume was nearly 3.3 million units, with a year-on-year increase of 118%. The proportion of folding screen products in the domestic smart phone market increased from 0.5% in 2021 to 1.2%. In 2022, Huawei firmly occupies the first position in the domestic folding screen market, with a market share of 47.4%; Samsung accounts for 16.5% of the market share;
