United Nations Secretary-General Guterres called on the international community to take immediate and urgent action to achieve peace, economic development and better respond to climate change on the 6th. Guterres called for disarmament and arms control to be "refocused" in order to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons and strive to achieve the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Turning to the issue of development, Guterres said that the international community must unite and integrate resources so that developing economies have liquidity to invest in education, universal health care, pandemic preparedness, decent work and social protection. Guterres said that the right to development and the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment complement each other. He urged the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions by half within 10 years, and urged the richer countries to at least honour the commitments made at the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change last year.
