Digitization of ancient books allows more people to share classic charm

Recently, the National Library (National Center for the Protection of Ancient Books) organized the seventh joint release of digital resources of ancient books. Together with Tianjin Library, Nanjing Library, Yunnan Provincial Library, Suzhou Library and Sun Yat-sen University Library, 6786 pieces of ancient book resources were newly released, adding new results to the digital protection and utilization of ancient Chinese books. The resources released this time include collections of poems, chronicles, manuscripts, stone inscriptions and other types, from the Han and Wei dynasties to the Republic of China, many of which are rare or unpublished documents. For example, the Northern Qi Book published by the Yunnan Provincial Library is a revised version of the Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties engraved in the Song Dynasty. There is a saying in the collection circle that "one page of the Song and two gold". The book is based on the engraving of the Song Dynasty, repaired by the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, and printed in the Ming Dynasty, which has a very high version value. With the opportunity of digitizing ancient books, readers and scholars can have a look at these rare ancient books. The voluminous ancient books and documents are the witnesses and recorders of China's long civilization and splendid culture, and are also the indispensable source of current inheritance and promotion of China's excellent traditional culture and promotion of its creative transformation and innovative development. However, how to balance the cultural relics and documents of ancient books, not only do a good job in the restoration and protection of ancient books, keep the cultural treasure of the Chinese nation, but also make the words on ancient books go out of the dust of old paper and meet with a wider range of readers and researchers, is a major problem that the work of ancient books has been facing. Fortunately, modern science and information technology provide a feasible way to solve the contradiction between the protection and utilization of ancient books. By means of scanning, microfilm and other technical means, the original appearance of ancient books can be completely and clearly preserved in digital form, effectively avoiding possible damage caused by human movement or reading, and greatly facilitating reading and research. On this basis, we can also use AI technology to carry out large-scale and systematic character recognition and input of ancient books, build a full-text database of ancient books and various knowledge bases, and realize full-text retrieval, text comparison, automatic punctuation, data analysis and other functions. The application of these technologies not only improves the efficiency of collation and research, but also broadens the research field of relevant humanities and enriches the ways and means of mining and utilizing ancient books. Since the launch of the "Chinese Ancient Books Protection Plan", the digitization process of ancient books in China has been accelerating, especially in recent years. In terms of resource construction, various ancient book collection and research institutions have focused on the collection and collation of digital resources and launched a number of online resource sharing platforms, which has significantly improved the openness of ancient book resources. According to statistics, up to now, 130000 ancient books and special collections of documents have been released nationwide. In addition, the digital return of overseas ancient books is also a highlight of the work of ancient books in recent years. The overseas ancient book survey and collation project, represented by the "Global Chinese Book Combination Project", has brought the overseas ancient books that have traveled thousands of miles back to their homeland, and also promoted the academic and cultural exchanges and mutual learning. Gratifying achievements have emerged one after another, but the digitization of ancient books still has a long way to go. Compared with the volume of existing ancient books, there is still a huge gap in the existing scale of digitalization, and there is much room for improvement in the sharing and opening level of digitalized achievements and the ability to dig in depth. Ancient books need a lot from restoration and preservation to research and arrangement
