Ensure that 500 million people have access to medicines, and fight against epidemic in rural areas with preparedness

2022-12-19

With the optimization and adjustment of epidemic prevention policies, it can be expected that rural areas with relatively weak basic medical security will become "key battlefields". Especially with the New Year's Day and the Spring Festival approaching, the countryside is about to usher in a round of people returning home. How to answer the question of "Rural Epidemic Prevention Examination" is not only related to the health of more than 500 million rural people, but also to the overall situation that the whole society can safely pass the "last leg" of the epidemic. In response, the joint prevention and control mechanism of the State Council formulated the Work Plan for Strengthening the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 and Health Services in Rural Areas (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan"), which makes important deployment for epidemic prevention in rural areas. As for drug reserve, the Plan clearly requires that "rural medical and health institutions and pharmacies should strengthen the reserve of symptomatic therapeutic drugs such as traditional Chinese medicine, antipyretic and antitussive drugs, and antigen detection kits. Township health centers and village clinics should dynamically reserve 15% to 20% of the population served, and densely populated areas should increase as appropriate". In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to "strengthen overall planning at the municipal level, timely scheduling at the county level, and ensure logistics distribution by drug supply enterprises". This is also an important measure to further sink various epidemic prevention materials and medical service guarantees, improve the ability of rural medical and health institutions to independently respond to the epidemic, and let rural people nearby and timely strengthen protection. The Program also specifically mentions the need to care for rural front-line staff and medical personnel. In rural areas, the elderly and other groups have weak awareness of viruses and self-protection awareness, and they need more active intervention from medical personnel. It is very important for rural areas to treat medical staff well and mobilize their enthusiasm. In addition, it may be difficult for villages, towns and rural areas that are more marginalized in the economic and social network to fully rely on the market to unblock the supply chain and meet the demand of the masses for medicine and medical treatment. Grass roots governments need to take the initiative to play a role, mobilize all social forces, including the neighbors to help each other, and fully protect the needs of key groups such as the elderly, pregnant and lying in women, and patients with basic diseases.
