Hong Kong holds by elections for the Legislative Council Election Committee

In 2022, the by election for the Election Committee of the Seventh Legislative Council of the Hong Kong SAR was successfully held on the 18th. Four candidates, Huang Jinhui, Chen Yongguang, He Jingkang and Shang Hailong, were elected. In this by election, 6 candidates competed for seats in 4 Legislative Council Election Committee sectors. At 9:00 on the same day, members of the Election Committee began to vote at the polling station at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, and the voting ended at 11:30. The Electoral Affairs Office also set up a polling station at Penny's Bay Community Isolation Facility in order to allow the Election Committee which was unable to go to the convention and exhibition polling station due to being quarantined or quarantined on polling day to vote. A total of 1307 members of the Election Committee voted in the by election, with a voting rate of 90.7%. According to the voting results, four candidates, Huang Jinhui, Chen Yongguang, He Jingkang and Shang Hailong, were elected. The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR, Li Jiachao, congratulated the elected members on the by election and said that this by election was the first by election of the Legislative Council after the improvement of the electoral system of the Hong Kong SAR and the implementation of the principle of "patriot governing Hong Kong". The SAR government organized this by election in accordance with the law to provide fair, fair and open elections for patriots who are interested in participating in the deliberation of government. It is expected that the four by elected members will fulfill their responsibilities, work together to create a constructive political environment and work with the SAR government to solve various problems in Hong Kong under the principle of administrative leadership and "patriot governing Hong Kong". Lu Qikang, Chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said that the voting and counting process in this by election was very smooth, and the arrangements for the by elections fully reflected the principles of openness, fairness and honesty. According to the arrangement, the SAR Government will hold an oath taking ceremony for the four by elected members at 10:00 on December 19 in the conference hall of the Legislative Council Complex, and the Chief Executive Li Jiachao will supervise the oath taking of the elected members. The 7th Legislative Council of the HKSAR consists of 40 members elected by the Election Committee, 30 members elected by functional constituencies and 20 members directly elected by districts. Later, Mai Meijuan, Zhang Guojun, Lin Zhiyuan and Sun Dong, four members of the Legislative Council elected by the Election Committee, resigned their seats and took office in the new SAR Government.
