Natural index shows that China ranks among the top five in biomedical science

2022-12-16

The Nature supplement "2022 Nature Index Biomedical Science", which was launched this week, shows the output changes of biomedical research in different countries and regions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the article share of one of the main indicators of the nature index. According to relevant data, the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan were among the top five biomedical scientists in 2015-2021. According to the natural index, the scientific research output of biomedicine continued to grow, but some countries showed a different trend in the first year and the second year of the pandemic. Among the leading countries in biomedicine, the share of articles in China, the UK, the Netherlands and Israel has been growing since 2019. According to the share of articles, the top five institutions in the biomedical field in 2021 are Harvard University, the National Institutes of Health, Stanford University, the Max Planck Society of Germany and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are also seven Chinese research institutions in the top 50, including Peking University (No. 24), Zhejiang University (No. 30), Shanghai Jiaotong University (No. 33), Sun Yat sen University (No. 45), University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (No. 46), Fudan University (No. 49) and Qinghua University (No. 50). Although biomedicine accounts for a relatively small proportion of China's overall natural index output, China holds a leading position among the institutions with the fastest increase in the share of articles in this field - Peking University, Zhejiang University, Sun Yat sen University and Fudan University rank among the five institutions with the fastest growth in biomedical research from 2020 to 2021. In terms of scientific research cooperation, Harvard University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have shown some influence both at home and around the world. From 2015 to 2021, the two most leading domestic biomedical partnerships were Harvard University and MIT, Chinese Academy of Sciences and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The partnerships between Harvard University and the University of Zurich, as well as between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the German Max Planck Society, are the two most advanced international biomedical cooperation groups. "It is obvious that global health challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic will inevitably promote the accelerated progress of biomedical science. The scientific research community hopes to continue to use these advances to address major health challenges facing the world, such as the growing threat of antibiotic resistance, aging population, and possible new pandemics." Simon Baker, editor in chief of Natural Index, said. (Reporter Zhang Lei) (Liaoxin News Agency)
