Intel X Xinhua III: Rebuilding the Next Generation Green Data Center with Low Carbon and Energy Saving

The digital economy has become a new engine driving the economic development of our country. As an important carrier, the data center has been expanding its construction volume and scale. However, with the wide application of data centers, the high energy consumption and carbon emissions of data centers are also concerned. How to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction through emerging technologies has become the focus of the industry and the urgent problem to be solved. Recently, xinhuanet interviewed Liu Hongcheng, vice president of the computing storage product line of Xinhuasan Group, and Wu Wenxin, chief technology officer of Intel Cloud and Industry Solutions Group, to discuss topics related to the application of energy-saving and low-carbon technologies in the new generation green data center under the "dual carbon" strategy. The two sides said that the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain should work together to improve the construction of industry standards, create a low-carbon, energy-saving and efficient industry ecology, and drive the entire data center industry to achieve sustainable development through technological innovation such as green matrix solutions. With the gradual reduction of national policies, PUE liquid cooling technology plays a key role. With digitalization becoming a new engine for economic development, the data center plays an important supporting role, and the number of racks grows rapidly. But at the same time, the power consumption of the data center is also constantly breaking records. Generally speaking, one of the data center energy efficiency evaluation indicators is PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), that is, the ratio of the total power consumption of the data center to the power consumption of IT equipment in the data center. The benchmark is 2. The closer the value is to 1, the higher the energy efficiency. In recent years, the state has issued relevant policies to put forward clear restrictions on PUE. In the Three Year Action Plan for the Development of New Data Centers (2021-2023) released earlier, it was clearly stipulated that the PUE of new large and above data centers would fall below 1.35 by the end of 2021, and even below 1.3 by 2023. The setting of hard indicators and timetables will help promote the rapid popularization of green data centers. Now, liquid cooling technology has become the key to reduce PUE. The traditional air cooling has low heat dissipation efficiency and high noise. At the same time, it needs to be equipped with an air conditioning system, which makes it difficult to improve the density of the entire server. With liquid cooling technology, the power of a single cabinet can reach tens of kilowatts or even hundreds of kilowatts, and the shelf availability of cabinets in the data center can be improved. At the same time, it can directly bring the heat of the data center to the outside, reduce the use of a large number of precision air conditioners, and reduce the power consumption of the data center. Liquid cooling can also improve server stability by reducing server temperature and dust cover. It can be predicted that with the maturity of the technology and supporting industry chain, the cost will gradually decrease, and the liquid cooling technology will be widely used. As a long-term and stable partner of Xinhuasan, Intel provides overall solutions and reference designs from the device level to the server system, rack and data center level. Combining the practical experience of air cooling, cold plate, immersion liquid cooling and other advanced cooling technologies, it works with China's partners in the whole industry chain to promote the establishment and improvement of the liquid cooling ecosystem and promote the improvement of industrial maturity.
