Matteo Ricci and "Matteo Ricci Rules"

On the campus of the Party School of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee in Xicheng District, Beijing, a tombstone covered by green trees reads "Tomb of the Jesuit Scholar". Behind the tombstone is the cemetery of Matteo Ricci, the Chinese Catholic pioneer. In 1610, the 38th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, Matteo Ricci, who had been in China for 28 years, died in Beijing, where the court gave him a special burial. At that time, there was a fierce religious reform movement in Europe, and the great geographical discovery was in the ascendant. Driven by the two, Europe erupted into a passion for missionary work. The young Matteo Ricci felt the emotion of the times and joined the new Catholic Church of Jesus. In 1578, at the age of 26, Matteo Ricci embarked on a mission to the East. He set out from Lisbon, Portugal, crossed the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean to India, and set out from India to cross the Strait of Malacca to the Pacific Ocean. On August 7, 1582, Matteo Ricci, who had gone through thousands of miles of waves, arrived in Macao with serious illness and finally set foot on the land of China. However, the danger of wind and waves is only the first threshold, and the greater challenge lies ahead of him. Before Matteo Ricci came to China, Christianity had spread on the land of China for several times, but all of them died out. During the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, a branch of Christian religion, called Nestorianism, spread eastward, all the way across the Iranian Plateau and the Pamirs Plateau to China, which is called Nestorianism in the Great Qin Dynasty Nestorianism Popular in China Monument. Nestorianism has been spreading in China for more than 200 years. When it flourished, it was known as the "Ten Laws of Dharma" and "One Hundred Cities in the Temple", but in fact, it did not spread in Central China, so it was involved in the destruction of Buddhism in Huichang, and then gradually disappeared in Central China. During the Mongolian cavalry's westward expedition, a large number of Christians from Western Asia and Eastern Europe were carried eastward. In the 31st year of the Yuan Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty (1294), Mongovino, a member of the Catholic Franciscans, arrived in Dadu and was allowed by Kublai Khan to preach in China. Although Mongovino's missionary work was reputed to be fruitful, in fact, Catholicism did not spread among the Han people, so with the demise of the Yuan Dynasty, Christianity disappeared again in Central China. The two eastward spread of Christianity failed to take root because it was unacceptable to the public. The Chinese civilization has a long history, and the sea embraces all rivers. The repeated demise of Christian religion in China shows that they have many unsolved difficulties in the process of communication. This dilemma finally made a breakthrough in Matteo Ricci's time. Many of Matteo Ricci's efforts were later praised as "Matteo Ricci's rules" by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. The core of his spirit was to try to think about how to believe in Catholicism from a Chinese cultural perspective as a Chinese. To think as a Chinese, the first challenge is undoubtedly language, clothing and social customs. The Jesuits have long realized that if they want to be accepted by the Chinese people and not be regarded as ignorant barbarians, they must master Chinese, especially Mandarin and beautifully written Chinese characters. After arriving in Macao, Matteo Ricci began to learn Chinese and studied the grammar of Chinese. While learning the language, Macao missionaries have been trying to enter Guangdong to live and preach. China has experienced many differences in history
