Researchers use new dating methods to reveal the age of complex sediments

The School of Resources and Environment of Lanzhou University, Qinghai Salt Lake Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other researchers jointly put forward an innovative single particle luminescence dating method that can be used for complex sediment dating. This new dating method is expected to solve the dating bottleneck of complex sediments in arid areas. Li Guoqiang, professor of the School of Resources and Environment of Lanzhou University, said that the arid region in central Asia is the largest inland arid region in the world and the most important dust source region in the Northern Hemisphere. Its climate change and driving mechanism at different time scales are important scientific basis for accurately predicting and coping with future climate change in arid regions. The accurate dating of sediments in the arid region of central Asia by using photoluminescence dating method, radiocarbon 14 dating method and other methods is an important advance to reveal the formation and evolution of the region's environment, understand climate change and mechanism, and reveal China's response to and impact on global climate change. It is reported that photoluminescence dating is the most widely used dating method at present, which has been successfully applied to the dating of sediments with simple sedimentary history, but it is difficult to accurately date the sediments with complex sedimentary history, such as rivers and lakes. In addition, although the radiocarbon 14 dating method can also be used to date the sediments with complex sedimentary history, its application has limitations, such as the problem that reliable dating materials are not easy to obtain for the sediments in the arid region of central Asia. Li Guoqiang said that the research team has successfully established a single particle luminescence dating method that can calculate the age of complex sediments after seven years, and has verified the new method. "We used the new method to date the proluvial paleosol sedimentary sequence of the Shalongka site in Hualong County, Qinghai Province, in the northeast of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. At the same time, we also used the radiocarbon 14 dating method to date. After comparison and verification, the two results are consistent, which proves that the new method is effective and reliable."
