The third exodus of the astronauts of Shenzhou XIV built an "overpass" on the space station

2022-11-18

According to the China Manned Space Engineering Office, at 16:50 on November 17, 2022 (Beijing time), after about 5.5 hours of extravehicular activities, Shenzhou XIV astronauts Chen Dong, Liu Yang and Cai Xuzhe worked closely together to successfully complete all the scheduled tasks of extravehicular activities. Chen Dong and Cai Xuzhe have safely returned to the space station to ask the sky experimental module, and the extravehicular activities have been a complete success. During the extravehicular activities, the astronauts first completed the installation of the connection devices between the Tianhe Core Module and the Sky Quest Experimental Module, and between the Tianhe Core Module and the Mengtian Experimental Module, and built a "overpass" for extravehicular walking in three compartments. The astronaut Cai Xuzhe realized the first extravehicular walking across the compartment through the "overpass"; In addition, the lifting of panoramic camera A and the installation of the power assist handle of the small robot arm were also completed, and the whole process was smooth and successful. This is the first astronaut exit activity after the basic configuration of the space station "T" has been assembled. It is the first time to test the ability of the astronaut and the combined manipulator to work together, and further verify the functional performance of the air lock chamber of the Sky Quest Experiment Module and the supporting equipment related to the exit activity. Building the "overpass" of the space station is the biggest attraction of this astronaut extravehicular activity. According to Li Xuedong, the deputy chief designer of the space station system of the Overall Design Department of the Fifth Academy of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, after the completion of the "T" configuration in orbit assembly of the space station, the scope of astronauts' extravehicular activities has been expanded from single module to three modules. In order to facilitate the astronauts' cross cabin crawling, an inter cabin connection device was installed between the Questioning Experiment Module and the Tianhe Core Module, and between the Mengtian Experiment Module and the Tianhe Core Module in this mission, which was vividly called the "overpass". One end of the "overpass" is connected with the base of the connecting device of the experimental cabin, and the other end is connected with the annular handrail of Tianhe Core Cabin. After installation, astronauts can crawl from the experimental module to the Tianhe Core Module without temporary bridging by the mechanical arm. In addition, the astronauts also unlocked the panoramic camera on the Sky Quest Experiment Module, and lifted the camera up about 210mm, so that it could look down on the outside environment of the entire Module III and have a wider view. In this mission, the combined mechanical arm came on the scene together for the first time, fully supporting the smooth implementation of the mission of leaving the cabin. The combined mechanical arm is composed of a large mechanical arm, a small mechanical arm and a large and small arm connecting piece. The boom plus the jib greatly expanded the coverage radius of the combined mechanical arm. The astronaut stood on the target adapter of the Tianhe Core Module and was able to operate the target of the third module of the mission, which was impossible for a single arm. In addition, compared with large and small manipulators with only 7 degrees of freedom, the combined arm has 14 degrees of freedom, which makes it easier to work. The increase of length and degree of freedom put forward higher requirements for the safety and reliability of the combined arm. In order to overcome technical difficulties, under the overall traction of the space station, the robot arm development team fully demonstrated and repeatedly tested, ensuring the safety and reliability of the combined arm, and providing more powerful support for tasks such as extravehicular load care and astronaut exit. It is worth mentioning that in the past, astronauts worked in single cabin, and each subsystem only needed to work around single cabin. Three cabin segments are required for cross cabin work in this time
