Over the past 10 years, the funding for research and experimental development in colleges and universities has increased from 76.87 billion yuan in 2012 to 159.2 billion yuan in 2021, with a total of more than one trillion yuan allocated in 10 years. The full-time equivalent number of research and experimental development personnel in scientific and technological activities in colleges and universities increased from 209 thousand person years in 2012 to 334 thousand person years in 2021. The convergence of innovation resources has laid a solid foundation for the original innovation ability of colleges and universities to rise and key technology breakthroughs. Major original innovation achievements often originate from deep basic research and cross disciplinary fields. Universities have natural advantages in these two aspects. In the field of physics, Xue Qikun from Tsinghua University led the team to observe the quantum anomalous Hall effect from experiments for the first time, which is one of the most important physical effects discovered by Chinese physicists, and also a major original breakthrough in the field of international condensed matter physics in recent years, and won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2018; In the field of chemistry, Zhou Qilin's team from Nankai University discovered a new framework structure of chiral spiro ligands, which raised the synthesis efficiency of chiral molecules to a new height, solved the problems that have plagued the field of asymmetric catalysis for more than half a century, and won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2019; In the field of materials science, Zhao Dongyuan's team from Fudan University innovated the synthesis method and theory of functional mesoporous materials. The new mesoporous catalyst created can greatly improve the utilization rate of crude oil resources, providing core technical support for solving energy and environmental problems.
