Start the test flight! Flying car "on the road"

2022-10-12

On the afternoon of the 10th local time, the flying car "Traveler X2" developed by China Xiaopeng Huitian Company successfully completed its first overseas public flight in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Flying cars, which have already appeared in various science fiction films, are expected to solve the problem of traffic congestion in big cities. At present, many leading enterprises around the world have deployed the flying car industry, but their technical routes are different. It is reported that "Traveler X2" adopts a pure electric flight mode, which can carry two passengers. It is suitable for low altitude flight in future cities, can meet the needs of short distance travel in cities, and can also serve for field rescue, medical transport and other scenarios. The endurance of "Traveler X2" is 35 minutes, and its maximum designed flight speed is 130 kilometers per hour. Its first overseas public flight has attracted great attention from the global media. The forecast report released by Morgan Stanley, an international financial service company, shows that the flying car industry will form a global market scale of 300 billion dollars in 2030 and reach 1.5 trillion dollars by 2040. Zhang Yangjun, a professor of the School of Vehicle and Transportation of Tsinghua University, said earlier that "by the first half of 2021, more than 200 enterprises or institutions have been developing about 420 types of flight vehicle related products." He said that the development of electrification and intelligent technology makes it completely feasible to "fly" the automobile. Flying automobile has become the strategic direction of automobile development and the competitive frontier of future automobile technology. According to the reporter of the Global Times, the enterprises in the flying car industry currently include aviation industry giants such as Boeing and Airbus, traditional car enterprises such as Daimler, Toyota, Volkswagen and Hyundai, and even technology companies such as Intel also participate in the research and development or investment of flying cars. For example, Boeing and Porsche jointly developed the electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft eVTOL; Toyota invested in Joby Aviation and SkyDrive. In July this year, Volkswagen released the first prototype of electric vertical takeoff and landing manned aircraft -- V MO。 Supernal, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor in South Korea, also recently demonstrated the latest concept of flight car passenger compartment, which is made of carbon fiber materials and can accommodate five people. The Japanese "SkyDrive" company even plans to apply the new two seat flying car SD-05 eVTOL designed in 2025 to the air taxi service of Osaka World Expo. In China, Xiaopeng Automobile and GAC Group are also accelerating the layout of the flying car industry. The "Traveler X2" flying car of Xiaopeng Automobile has previously passed the review under the supervision of the Dubai Civil Aviation Administration, and Chinese enterprises have become the first enterprises to pass the evaluation of this heavy flying vehicle in Dubai. However, the investment and R&D boom of major enterprises in flying cars can hardly cover many bottlenecks encountered in the development of flying cars. Some industry experts believe that we should be cautious and optimistic about the future of flying cars. Before large-scale promotion, the technology, regulations and systems related to flying cars are the first problems to be solved in the industry. Professor Lin Haiying, Director of the Experimental Center of the School of Transportation Science and Engineering of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, previously accepted the Global Times
