New materials can prolong the service life of space equipment

Russia's South Ural State University, together with its Chinese and Polish counterparts, has developed new materials that can extend the service life of valuable parts in the aerospace field, and can also protect metal coatings from corrosion. The research was published in the recent Journal of Alloys and Compounds. The News Office of Southern Ural National University said that the three new materials with rare characteristics are the results of the joint work of scientists from China, Russia and Poland. These materials are so-called high entropy intermetallic compounds. Their characteristics in phase stability and the regularity of atomic arrangement provide a bright prospect for the manufacture of widely used precious compounds. Ostowali Mogadam, a researcher in Crystal Growth Laboratory of South Ural National University, said: "Two thirds of the samples we obtained have high hardness, which can extend the service life of important parts in the aerospace industry. Materials can be used as coatings to protect metal parts from corrosion. For example, one of them is suitable for engine ignition parts and gas turbine blades; the other compound is high-speed magnetic rotor (Engine parts version), because this material has high yield strength (i.e. reverse deformation). " Mogadam said that these three composites can be used as high-performance catalysts. High entropy intermetallic compounds are composed of different atoms, each of which has its own role in accelerating specific chemical reactions. Therefore, compared with precious metals, these compounds show greater catalytic activity. Mogadam said that the main part of the above work was carried out by the Russian team. Russian researchers found new parameters of materials, prepared and described the characteristics of samples. While the researchers of Jilin University in China monitored the industrial environment of composite materials, the researchers of Silesia University of Technology in Poland analyzed the intermediate data and proposed new specific application fields of high entropy intermetallic compounds. At present, researchers from the three countries are setting up an international joint research team to develop new compounds with improved oxidation resistance, room temperature ductility and magnetism.
