"The earth is not rustic": the life of a knowledge farmer in the mountains

2022-10-08

When people see the title of the book "earth is not rustic", they will naturally associate it with the idiom "earth is not rustic". In the Xinhua Dictionary, "Earth" means "local" and "out of fashion." Li "means the place where people live, and" Qi "means" state of mind "and" style of work "in addition to the" Qi "of nature. For a long time, in China, people are used to comparing "foreign style" with "local style": "foreign style" is foreign, fashionable, modern, and what modern people pursue. Therefore, it is logical that people regard the city people who live in luxury and dress well as foreigners; On the other hand, farmers who have never been out of the countryside and have grown up dealing with local people will be regarded as rustic, and the place where they live and work is more unfashionable. However, why does the author of this book insist on saying that "earth is not earth"? The key is the subtitle: "life in the mountains of knowledge farmers". This book is a record of two post-80s youths' field life of seven years of self cultivation and self feeding. In this book, Lishan is the author's home, 70 kilometers from the center of Beijing. The author explains that "Li" refers to the communities where people live, and "Shan" refers to the hills and shallow mountains surrounding these communities. The authors describe their own Lishan as follows: it covers an area of 30 mu, with less than half of it being agricultural land, orchards, human settlements and breeding areas (there are more than 200 chickens, 30 sheep, 5 geese, 3 rabbits, 2 cats and 5 dogs), and more than half being uncultivated mountain forests; It takes five minutes to get to the neighborhood, and 50 minutes to the village supermarket. The nearest bus stop is next to the supermarket. It can be seen that this Lishan is not the Lishan in Chinese - Laolin deep mountain. It is a farm manor full of smoke and fire. Here, spring planting is long in summer, autumn harvest is long in winter. Lishan and its neighbor farmers follow the law of four seasons. They work at sunrise and rest at sunset. The life of Lishan farmers seems to be the same as that of local villagers. As the saying goes, people who depend on the mountain eat the mountain, and those who depend on the water eat the water. Here, the young people face the land with their backs to the sky, and work diligently on the land. They not only learned various farming techniques, but also were familiar with and adapted to the local life customs. However, we must not forget that these are a pair of "knowledge" farmers! In the Lishan mountains shown in the book, there are several places that are obviously different from the adjacent landscapes achieved by knowledge farmers. Let me cite two examples: wetlands; Lishan and its adjacent areas are arid areas. There are neither springs nor streams. Farmland irrigation, drinking water for people and animals, and domestic water all depend on wells and water cellars. In order to cope with the possible water cut-off and save water at any time, the pair of knowledge farmers designed rainwater collection pipes. The filtered rainwater can not only water the land, but also provide drinking water and domestic water for livestock. The two young people made persistent efforts and built a sedimentation tank for grey water (domestic wastewater without feces and urine). The treated waste water is introduced into the excavated low-lying land. With the addition of natural rainwater, the low-lying land has turned into a small marsh with swaying reeds and repeated frogs in a few years. It can be called the little green island in this arid area. Dry latrine; Most of those who have lived in rural areas or traveled in remote areas have experienced embarrassment when entering dry toilets. Now, none
