HKUST finds new targets for blood proteins to help treat Alzheimer's disease

The Hong Kong University of science and Technology (HKUST) announced on the 25th that its research team recently discovered a blood protein that plays a key role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, which helps to design innovative treatment strategies, reduce the risk of disease and improve the patient's condition. According to the introduction of the research team of the University of science and technology, earlier studies found that the immune cells (microglia) in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease could not effectively clear the harmful amyloid plaques, leading to the dysfunction of nerve cells, causing memory loss and cognitive impairment. Recently, an international research team led by Ye Yuru, Professor of Chenxing life sciences of HKUST and director of Hong Kong neurodegenerative disease center, found that with age, the content of soluble ST2 protein in blood and brain increased, which would disturb the effect of cytokine interleukin 33, reduce the ability of microglia to clear amyloid plaques, and lead to accumulation of amyloid plaques. The team's findings reveal that reducing the level of soluble ST2 protein can be a method to treat Alzheimer's disease, which helps to develop innovative treatment strategies. (outlook new era)
