A new record of steady strong magnetic field in China

On August 12, the national steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device developed by the strong magnetic field science center of Hefei Institute of material science, Chinese Academy of Sciences again reached the "scientific and technological peak". Its hybrid magnet (magnet diameter 32 mm) generates a steady-state magnetic field of 452200 Gauss (i.e. 45.22 Tesla), breaking the world record of the same type of magnet and becoming the highest steady-state magnetic field that can support scientific research in the world. The original world record was created by the national high magnetic field laboratory of the United States in 1999. Its hybrid magnet produced 450000 Gauss, which has maintained the record for 23 years. The new record of 452200 Gauss is equivalent to more than 900000 times the earth's magnetic field. It is reported that the national steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device has 10 magnets: 5 water-cooled magnets, 4 superconducting magnets and 1 hybrid magnet. Among them, the hybrid magnet is the magnet with the highest technical difficulty in the world and also the magnet capable of generating the highest steady-state magnetic field. In 2016, the strong magnetic field team independently developed a hybrid magnet with a center field strength of 400000 Gauss, ranking the second in the world. After more than five years of technological research, the strong magnetic field team with an average age of 35 years has made major technological breakthroughs by innovating the magnet structure, developing new materials and optimizing the manufacturing process. The steady-state strong magnetic field of 452200 Gauss generated this time has become an important milestone in the construction of extreme conditions for scientific experiments in China and the development of strong magnetic field technology in the world. It is understood that since the national steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device was put into operation, it has operated more than 500000 machine hours, providing experimental conditions for more than 170 units at home and abroad. It has carried out frontier research on more than 3000 subjects in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials, life health, engineering technology, and has achieved a series of major scientific and technological achievements. For example, the three-dimensional quantum Hall effect caused by the outer orbital was discovered for the first time, and the molecular and neural loop mechanisms of improving learning and memory by sunlight were revealed. At the same time, the achievements derived from the R & D device and many achievements produced by the device research, such as combined scanning probe microscopy and national class I anti-cancer innovative targeted drugs, have been successfully transformed into real productivity. It is reported that the generation of the world's highest steady-state magnetic field has greatly improved the experimental conditions for supporting scientists to carry out material science research, and will play an indispensable and key role in the research of low-power electronic materials. With the improvement of the magnetic field strength generated by the hybrid magnet, the opening and sharing level of the national steady-state strong magnetic field experimental device and the user service level will also be greatly improved, becoming a major "weapon" to support China's scientific and technological innovation.
