Siheruyi: people and feelings in social media

2022-10-08

Zhang Yiwei's latest novel collection "siheruyi" is full of strong contemporary flavor and realistic feeling. Wechat, Douban, pinduoduo and other daily software enter the narrative space of the novel, interweaving the complex relationship between social media and human survival. "Emotion" is the key to breaking this network. In the world of social media, it shows the double aspects of expansion and barrenness: overwhelming emotional torrent and speechless bewilderment. Between the true and the false, Zhang Yiwei uses "emotional reality" to break through the wishful thinking of "Ruyi", to show the cruelty of existence and the darkness of human nature, and to show the helplessness and vagrancy of emotion in the "Lyric limit" of the characters. But in the end, she did not forget to leave light and warmth, and inquired about the ancient proposition of "human" and "love" in a literary way. Sihe Ruyi is the name of both the collection of novels and a novel in the book. Sheng Ming, who is studying for his doctorate abroad, keeps daily communication with his girlfriend Ru Yi on his mobile phone and shares their trivial lives in a few words. The two people who are far away from each other are "brought closer" by their mobile phones, but they are also inadvertently alienated, but both sides are trying to maintain. The novel specifically describes Sheng Ming's dream: the landlady introduced him to girlfriends who are like Ruyi. They have good English, have taught in China, and are full of love. Everything is a copy of Ruyi, but in the dream he has lost Ruyi. Sheng Ming sent a wechat message to Ru Yi in the wake-up, turning the anxiety of love into the hidden worry of work, and finally "calmed down" in the encouraging Reply of the other party; At the same time, he fell into a trance again, and was at a loss between his fear of the dream and his soberness. Being in a foreign land, lonely and helpless, and with uncertain future, Ru Yi has become Shengming's psychological support. However, the "love" between the two sides is only expressed as a routine wechat communication. In the face of some doubts, Ruyi wants to ask, but he still realizes that "what's so far away to ask?"? Sheng Ming's doctoral thesis entitled "emotional attachment and modern technology" is an excellent summary of this kind of love relationship: wechat, a modern technology, maintains their emotional attachment and makes their communication run in the identity logic of "lovers". However, behind this identity, there is also a dark side of their lives - Ru Yi, a teacher, actively communicates literature with students suffering from depression, But the other side wrote in his diary his dislike of the teacher; Sheng Ming's landlord's youngest son is not concerned about his future at all. His rebuttal makes Sheng Ming, a doctor, speechless. All these things were the topics of their communication, but they ended up with nothing. Social media provides them with an opportunity to transform these "dark faces" into "clear words". However, when communication really begins, the difficulty of this "transformation" makes them feel that communication is ineffective. "Ruyi", the expectations and wishes that embody the unique feelings of the Chinese people, contains too much bitterness and helplessness in their stories. They live in the uncertainty between "Ruyi" and reality, between expectations and fatigue. Social changes are extremely rapid, and the Shanghai where they live has changed a lot in a few years. Ru Yi even thinks that Sheng Ming will lose his job when he comes back. But what can I do? The novel does not give an answer. Perhaps this dilemma is precisely the title of "four in one"
