2022-08-02

China has assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for August since August 1. Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, presided over the internal consultations of the Security Council and adopted the work plan of the Security Council for this month. According to the plan, the Security Council will consider Yemen, Syria, Libya, Palestine in the Middle East, counter-terrorism and other issues in August. At the initiative of China, the Security Council will also hold two thematic meetings on "safeguarding common security" and "strengthening capacity-building of African countries". On the same day, Zhang Jun briefed the mainstream media stationed at the United Nations on China's consideration of assuming the rotating presidency of the Security Council in August. On strengthening the role of the United Nations and China's contribution to the United Nations, Zhang Jun pointed out that the United Nations is the banner of multilateralism and a symbol of collective strength. No matter how the international situation changes, the role of the United Nations is irreplaceable. In the final analysis, the strength of the United Nations comes from the support and contributions of Member States. In this regard, major countries should set an example and play a responsible role in fulfilling their due obligations. China has always been a staunch supporter of the United Nations, has always maintained close cooperation with the United Nations, and has always supported the United Nations in responding to global challenges, maintaining peace and security and promoting common development with practical actions. Zhang Jun said that China has always insisted on practicing genuine multilateralism. One of China's basic starting points in handling international affairs is to firmly uphold the international system with the United Nations as the core and support the United Nations in playing a core role in international affairs. As secretary general Guterres said, the partnership with China is an important pillar of the United Nations and multilateralism. China has always been committed to safeguarding world peace and security. China firmly upholds the basic norms governing international relations based on the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, consistently stands for a political solution to hotspot issues, and fully supports the good offices efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations. Not long ago, Chinese leaders put forward the global security initiative, which pointed out the direction and path for solving the current global security dilemma. Zhang Jun said that China will fully promote the UN development agenda. China has not only achieved the poverty reduction goal of the 2030 agenda 10 years ahead of schedule, but also put forward the global development initiative, which will inject new impetus into the realization of the 2030 sustainable development goals, solve the global food crisis, inequality and imbalance in development and make Chinese contributions. China has taken concrete actions to address climate change. As the largest developing country, China will strive to achieve carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060. From carbon peak to carbon neutralization, China will complete the task in the shortest time in the world. This task is very arduous and requires great sacrifices, but China will do what it says. Zhang Jun said that China has always actively fulfilled its financial obligations to the United Nations. China is a contributor to the second general assembly of the United Nations and a contributor to peacekeeping. Although it is still faced with such arduous tasks as fighting the epidemic, developing the economy and improving people's livelihood, China has overcome difficulties and paid its contributions and peacekeeping contributions in full and on time, providing a strong resource guarantee for the work of the United Nations and peacekeeping operations. The presidency of the United Nations Security Council is held by 15 members of the Security Council in rotation for one month. (news agency)
