Ruijin Hospital wounding incident: anti violence has a long way to go

2022-07-11

At noon on July 9, a knife injury occurred in Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University. Many people were injured, including children and medical staff. The suspect has been subdued by the police. At present, four injured persons are being treated, and their lives are not in danger. The case is under further investigation. The details of the incident have not been released, and the motive of the suspect remains to be investigated, but such a violent incident is undoubtedly a serious criminal crime. Compared with previous violent medical injuries, although this incident also occurred in the hospital, from the current information, "victims" include both medical staff and medical staff, including children. Some even say that "children and women are the main targets of attack", which can be said to be an indiscriminate case against doctors and patients. After the case, there were more voices to strengthen the security check of the hospital. Tao Yong, chief ophthalmologist of Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, also called on the social platform that the hospital should install security inspection equipment and implement the security inspection system as soon as possible. This kind of sound will appear after every violent medical incident. From a practical point of view, in recent years, the security work of hospital security inspection in some places has indeed been strengthened. For example, by July 2021, Beijing has achieved full coverage of security checks in tertiary hospitals. In addition, the relevant regulations issued by eight departments including the National Health Commission in September last year also require hospitals to establish a safety inspection system on the basis of taking into account the medical experience of patients and not affecting the normal medical order. From this incident, it is still a problem worth facing up to that we should pay more attention to the safety guarantee of hospitals, provide doctors with a safer practice environment, and let patients have a safer medical environment. In other words, the superposition of violent incidents in hospitals is making the social consensus on strengthening security inspection in hospitals stronger and stronger. However, although we should respect the safety anxiety of medical staff and effectively ensure their safety, at the same time, we must also understand that strengthening security inspection is only an expedient measure, or it is not the fundamental way to enhance the sense of security of medical staff. On the one hand, the explicit and implicit costs involved in strengthening hospital security inspection should not be ignored. For example, in the relevant provisions of the National Health Commission, it is also clear that there is a premise for hospitals to establish a safety inspection system - "on the basis of giving consideration to patients' medical experience and not affecting the normal medical order". On the other hand, the role of security inspection has its own limitations. It may just make the hospital a safer place, but it may not be equal to ensuring the doctors' sense of security. Therefore, at present, it may be necessary to increase security inspection measures for some large hospitals, but when hospitals become a "risk" place, or when medical staff have safety anxiety, we still cannot avoid a more fundamental problem, that is, the doctor-patient relationship. Of course, the "medicine" here refers not only to medical staff, but also to our medical system. Although this problem is a cliche and has considerable complexity in solving it, which is far less "simple" than increasing security measures, it should not be avoided or pretended to be invisible. The wounding events in hospitals are all naked social violence in essence, which are not allowed by civilized society and law. (optional) (outlook new era)
