Tianwen-1 completed its scheduled scientific exploration mission

2022-06-30

According to the lunar exploration and space engineering center of the National Space Administration, as of June 29, 2022, the orbiter of tianwen-1 mission had been flying normally for 706 days, and obtained medium resolution image data covering the whole planet of Mars. All scientific payloads have realized global exploration of Mars. Both the tianwen-1 orbiter and the Mars rover have completed the established scientific exploration missions. Tianwen-1 mission was successfully launched on July 23, 2020, and rendezvous with Mars on February 10, 2021. It successfully implemented capture braking and entered the orbit around Mars. After 3 months' detailed survey of the pre selected landing area, the Mars landing was successfully carried out on May 15, 2021. On May 22, 2021, the "zhurong" Mars rover successfully drove onto the surface of Mars and began patrol exploration. On August 15, 2021, the "zhurong" Mars rover successfully completed the established scientific exploration mission for 90 Mars days and continued to implement the extended exploration mission. Affected by the severe winter cold and dust weather in the landing area, the rover will enter the winter sleep mode on May 18, 2022 according to the design status, and will resume normal operation around December 2022. The orbiter has circled Mars 1344 times, realizing global coverage. At present, the status is normal. In the follow-up, we will continue to carry out global remote sensing exploration, and carry out extended technical tests at an appropriate time to carry out advanced technical verification for relevant tasks. According to the introduction of the lunar exploration and space engineering center of the National Space Administration, after nearly two years of flight and exploration, the tianwen-1 mission has obtained about 1040gb of original scientific data from 13 scientific payloads configured for the Mars rover and the orbiter. After receiving and processing on the ground, the standard scientific data products have been submitted to the scientists' team on a monthly basis for analysis and interpretation. Relevant scientific achievements have been published in well-known academic journals at home and abroad. These scientific data will be opened to scientists around the world at an appropriate time. Scientists around the world are welcome to actively apply for research and jointly promote human exploration of the universe. In addition, in the spirit of open and shared cooperation, NASA has actively promoted cooperation with national space agencies and the scientific community: it has shared the orbital data of its Mars Orbiter with NASA and the European Space Agency, and carried out collision warning cooperation; The "zhurong" Mars rover and the European Space Agency's "Mars Express" orbiter carried out data relay communication experiments to achieve China EU cooperation in Mars scientific data relay.
