Representative of China: I hope the Yemeni ceasefire agreement will be transformed into a permanent ceasefire

2022-06-15

Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations Zhang Jun said at the UN Security Council open meeting on Yemen on the 14th that the Yemeni ceasefire agreement should be the starting point of broader efforts and should be transformed into a permanent ceasefire and a sustainable political solution. Zhang Jun said that under the chairmanship of the UN special envoy for Yemen, glendberry, the Yemeni government forces and the Hussein armed forces have held two rounds of military coordination meetings and decided to meet regularly in the future. China welcomes this. China supports the special envoy to continue to promote communication between the parties concerned on the Yemen issue, implement various measures to rebuild mutual trust, maintain the current good momentum and strive for more progress in the peace process in a rational and pragmatic manner. The Security Council should continue to maintain unity and join forces with influential regional countries to play a constructive role in promoting the political settlement of the Yemen issue. Zhang Jun pointed out that the main task at present is to fully implement the ceasefire agreement, especially reopen the road to TAZ, Yemen, and alleviate the humanitarian situation in TAZ as soon as possible. It is hoped that all parties in Yemen will show political will on the issue of reopening the TAZ Road on the basis of the special envoy's recommendations, make necessary compromises and create conditions for the next step of peace negotiations. Zhang Jun stressed that the international community should maintain its attention to Yemen and take strong measures to continue to lend a helping hand to Yemen. The relevant UN agencies should enhance their sense of urgency, strengthen coordination, solve the problem of resource shortage, and prevent greater crises. All parties in Yemen should also fully cooperate with international humanitarian operations and ensure safe and timely humanitarian access. China supports the Yemeni presidential commission in its active work, implementing the ceasefire agreement, orderly restoring state institutions, restoring economic vitality, and constantly advancing the political process. China hopes that the presidential commission will unite all parties in Yemen, pay equal attention to peace and development, and push the country onto the track of normal development at an early date. The Yemeni ceasefire agreement took effect on the evening of April 2 local time, and the ceasefire extension began at 7 p.m. local time on June 2. In september2014, Hussein armed forces seized Sana'a, and then occupied Southern Yemen. In march2015, Saudi Arabia led the establishment of a multinational coalition force to launch military operations against the Hussein armed forces. In december2018, under the good offices of the United Nations, the Yemeni government and the Hussein armed forces reached an agreement on ceasefire and exchange of prisoners of war, but soon the two sides accused each other of breaking the ceasefire agreement. UN data show that the war in Yemen has led to more than 150000 deaths and millions of civilians displaced. (Xinhua News Agency)
