2022-06-14

On June 13, 2022, State Councilor and foreign minister Wangyi held a video meeting with foreign minister Mahuta of New Zealand at request. Mahuta said that the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between New Zealand and China is a major event in bilateral relations. New Zealand is committed to developing the New Zealand China comprehensive strategic partnership and promoting practical cooperation and people to people and cultural exchanges in economic, trade and other fields. New Zealand has long adhered to the one China policy and appreciates China's respect for the resumption of its independent foreign policy. Singapore and China can achieve common goals through dialogue and carry out cooperation on climate change, combating epidemics and promoting regional development and prosperity. Wangyi expressed that since the establishment of diplomatic ties half a century ago, China Singapore relations have gone through changes in the international situation and become a successful example of win-win cooperation among countries with different social systems, historical cultures and development stages. China Singapore relations have created many "firsts" and played a leading role in China's relations with developed countries. China appreciates that the New Zealand government has always pursued a positive and pragmatic policy towards China and has taken China relations as one of the main directions of its foreign relations. China attaches importance to the status and role of New Zealand, always regards New Zealand as an important strategic cooperative partner, and is full of confidence in the prospects of bilateral relations. The two sides should earnestly sum up the successful experience of the past 50 years, enhance mutual trust, focus on mutually beneficial cooperation, and open up the next 50 years of more mature, stable, mutually beneficial and win-win bilateral relations. Wangyi said that as the foreign minister has said many times, China Singapore relations have become increasingly mature and resilient. The most important experience of the 50 years of bilateral exchanges is mutual respect. Both sides respect the development path chosen by the other people, pursue an independent foreign policy, cherish and advocate multilateralism, neither impose their will on the other, and both insist on non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. These valuable experiences are worth upholding and carrying forward. Wangyi expressed that China is willing to work with Singapore to earnestly implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, enhance political mutual trust, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, tell the story of friendly exchanges between the two countries, and consolidate the public opinion foundation of bilateral relations. Both sides should also implement the upgraded protocol of the China Singapore Free Trade Agreement, make good use of the China Singapore ministerial dialogue on climate change, and accelerate green recovery. Wangyi said that exchanges and cooperation between China and the Pacific island countries have a long history and are flourishing. They are an important part of South South cooperation. As the largest developing country, China is willing to share its own development opportunities with island countries with diplomatic relations and help them accelerate their development. New Zealand is the standard bearer of regional multilateralism and has always been committed to regional peace and stability. China respects New Zealand's traditional ties with Pacific island countries and the existing regional cooperation mechanisms. The cooperation between China and the Pacific island countries that have established diplomatic relations can go hand in hand with the existing arrangements in the region and complement each other. According to the wishes of the island countries, China is willing to continue to carry out more trilateral and multi-party cooperation projects with New Zealand to jointly build an open, inclusive, United and cooperative South Pacific. Mahuta said that the Pacific island countries are facing severe challenges such as coping with the COVID-19, recovering their economies and coping with climate change. Singapore and China should support island countries to overcome the above challenges through bilateral and multilateral platforms. New Zealand believes that the global development initiative and the global security initiative are of strategic significance and is willing to work with China to make joint efforts on global development and security. The two sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common interest. (Xinhua News Agency)
