Scientific eye use and outdoor activities are the "good medicine" for myopia prevention and control

2022-05-30

Can myopia be cured? Don't be fooled by the merchants! On the occasion of the "June 1" International Children's day, the China Consumer Association issued a consumption tip to remind children, adolescents and parents that under the current medical technology conditions, myopia cannot be cured. Do not credulous the so-called advertisements for the treatment of myopia. Scientific use of eyes and appropriate outdoor activities are the "good medicine". In recent years, the myopia rate of children and adolescents in China has been at a high level. According to the data released by the National Health Commission, in 2018, the overall myopia rate of children and adolescents nationwide was 53.6%, and by 2019, the figure had decreased to 50.2%. However, since 2020, the time and frequency of online classes at home have increased, and the overall myopia rate of children and adolescents has increased to 52.7%. The problem of teenagers' myopia has attracted great attention from the government, society, schools, families and other aspects. It is precisely because China has a large number of myopic groups that a large number of "vision protection products" continue to emerge in the market, such as eye protection patches, eyesight cream, eye protection instruments, acupoint massage instruments, and use the expressions of "rehabilitation", "recovery", "relieving eye fatigue", "reducing the degree", "improving eyesight", "myopia cure", "myopic Nemesis" and "degree repair", Some also cited some "successful" cases to win the trust of consumers. According to the China Consumer Association, most of these advertisements lack scientific basis, which not only infringes upon the consumers' right to know, but also makes some consumers misunderstand that "it is easy to treat myopia", and then ignores the prevention and control of children's myopia. In addition, there are some rehabilitation intervention products and services for children and adolescents' myopia, such as traditional Chinese medicine, ear beans, plantar stimulation, training equipment, massage, and other seemingly scientific methods for the treatment of vision, such as Miao medicine, acupuncture, special glasses, etc. some consumers may have some "effects" after trying or receiving services for the first time. In this regard, some experts said that they all relieve some symptoms caused by visual fatigue by relaxing the nerves and muscles, but myopia still exists. It is reported that the National Health Commission, the State Administration of market supervision and other six departments clearly pointed out in the notice on further standardizing the correction of myopia among children and adolescents and strengthening supervision in 2019 that "under the current medical technology conditions, myopia cannot be cured". The China Consumer Association believes that if the pseudomyopia is caused by overuse of eyes, it is possible to go to a regular ophthalmic medical institution for examination in time and pass the scientific method; However, if true myopia has occurred, it is very unreliable to say that the degree of myopia can be reduced or even restored to normal through products such as eyesight cream and eye protection patches. At present, it can only be corrected by wearing glasses (including frame glasses and contact lenses) and myopia surgery. Some experts pointed out that the reason why the incidence of juvenile myopia in China has been at a high level is mainly because of early exposure to electronic products in infancy, too long use of electronic products, insufficient sleep and exercise time, etc. The China Consumer Association believes that early prevention and early control are the key to children's vision health. From birth to the age of 3 is the "golden age" for children's visual development. Try to avoid using electronic products before the age of 3; The age from 3 to 6 is a "critical period" for the development of eyes and visual function. Parents should always pay attention to their eye development and visual health, and help their children form a good habit of using scientific, healthy and hygienic eyes since childhood. If the child shows signs of abnormal vision such as getting close to the screen when watching TV, complaining about headache or eye fatigue, and often rubbing his eyes, he should be taken to a regular eye medical institution for examination in time. The China Consumer Association suggests that parents should ensure that their children have a reasonable diet and adequate sleep every day, guide their children to read and write with correct posture and distance, use their eyes continuously for no more than 40 minutes, and pay attention to the brightness of the surrounding environment. For students who need online classes, parents should help their children choose and use electronic products properly. After using electronic products for 30 to 40 minutes, they should rest for 10 minutes; The younger the age, the shorter the continuous use of electronic products. The single use time of electronic products for non learning purposes should not exceed 15 minutes, and the cumulative use time per day should not exceed 1 hour. We should actively urge children to carry out outdoor activities and physical exercise. We should ensure more than 2 hours of outdoor activities every day or more than 14 hours a week to form good living habits. For children with myopia, outdoor activities should be increased to slow down the further development of myopia. It is suggested that outdoor activities should be more than 3 hours a day.
