Wang Yi holds video meeting with German Foreign Minister Burke

2022-05-25

On May 24, 2022, State Councilor and foreign minister Wang Yi held a video meeting with German Foreign Minister Burke at request. Wang Yi said that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany, which is of great significance as a link between the past and the future. Over the past 50 years, we have walked an extraordinary path. The two countries have adhered to the concept of seeking common ground while reserving differences, mutual benefit and win-win results, deepened cooperation in various fields, and established an all-round strategic partnership, which has become an important factor of stability in today's world. The healthy and stable development of China Germany relations is in the interests of both sides and is conducive to the two countries playing a positive role in safeguarding world peace, stability and development. Wang Yi expressed that the two sides should make good use of the government consultation mechanism, constantly inject new fuel into this "super engine" and add new impetus to bilateral relations. We should make good preparations for the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, promote the high-level dialogue on strategy, security, finance and people to people and cultural exchanges, strengthen friendly exchanges among people, local governments, youth, education and culture, and consolidate the social and public opinion foundation of bilateral relations. Wang Yi said that over the past 50 years, China and Germany have been deeply involved in each other's development and have benefited from it. Practical cooperation has always been the "bottom color" of China Germany relations. China has become Germany's largest trading partner for six consecutive years, and Germany is China's largest trading partner in Europe. While deepening cooperation in traditional fields, China is willing to expand cooperation in emerging fields such as intelligent manufacturing, information and communication, service trade and new energy vehicles, so as to create new growth points for the economic development of the two countries. Belburke said that China is an important partner of Germany. Germany is formulating a new strategy for China and looks forward to taking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to promote the further development of bilateral relations. We are ready to make preparations for the next round of consultations between the two governments, maintain exchanges of visits with China at all levels, strengthen cooperation in environmental governance, climate change, anti epidemic and other fields, and facilitate personnel exchanges. At the same time, both sides should also handle the competitive relationship well. Wang Yi stressed that China and Germany have different development stages, and their economies are highly complementary. Cooperation has always been the keynote of bilateral exchanges, and competition should also be benign and orderly to drive their respective accelerated development. It is hoped that Germany's new China strategy will remain positive and pragmatic, bring positive expectations and promote greater development of bilateral relations in the next 50 years. The two sides exchanged views on global issues. Wang Yi said that both China and Germany are beneficiaries and contributors to globalization, and the clamor of decoupling and chain breaking is not in the interests of both sides and countries. At present, the geopolitical crisis continues to evolve, the COVID-19 continues to delay, the world economic recovery is weak, and global challenges are complex and urgent. As two major countries, China and Germany should further strengthen strategic communication, form joint forces and inject more stability and positive energy into the world. In particular, the two sides should take a clear-cut stand to defend genuine multilateralism, promote the democratization of international relations, and uphold the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the basic norms of international relations based on international law. Burke said that Germany supports multilateralism and is firmly committed to strengthening European Strategic Autonomy. The two sides exchanged views on the food problem caused by the spillover of the crisis in Ukraine. Wang Yi stressed that China has fed one fifth of the world's population with less than 9% of the world's land, which is itself a major contribution to the world. At the same time, China has demonstrated its responsibility as a big country and continuously provided emergency food aid to the countries most in need. China will never be absent on major issues of concern to the international community. Under the current situation, the international community should promote a ceasefire as soon as possible and provide a green channel for Russian Ukrainian grain exports. China is willing to maintain communication with all parties. The two sides also exchanged views on the Afghan issue. (Xinhua News Agency)
